THE CLOISTER at St. Matthias is presently undergoing extensive renovations and archaeological study. It has been found necessary to fortify some of the pillars and foundations, and some of the ancient stone walls are presently being reinforced and restored.
DURING the secularization that followed the French Revolution, the monks were expelled from the abbey from 1802 to 1880. The family that came into possession of the abbey buildings during the secularization used the cloister and adjacent rooms as sheds and stables for cattle, sheep, and other livestock. The Congregation of Beuron reacquired the abbey buildings and began the restoration of monastic life in 1880 and in 1980 the community joined the Congregation of the Annunciation.

ABBEY CHURCH from CLOISTER |
BUILT around 1240, the cloister was severely damaged during the secularization in the early nineteenth century, and is still in process of restoration to its original medieval appearance. The 38 carved capitals, depicting New and Old Testament parallels, were begun in the nineteen-fifties and are the work of the Trier sculptor and stone mason, Willi Hahn.
