Maxims3_01

1. The beginning of love - to be suspicious of glory.

2. Good it is to be rich in gentleness and love

2. _[50]  Καλὸν πλουτεῖν ἐν πραΰτητι καὶ ἀγάπῃ.

3. The winnower of virtue is the tempt[ing-thought] of pride.

3. _[51]  Λικμήτωρ ἀρετῆς
   λογισμὸς ὑπερήφανος.

4. The way is made level  (Lk 3.5) by almsgiving.

4. _[52]  Λεία ὁδὸς ὑπὸ ἐλεημοσύνης γίνεται.

Lk 3.5: the rough ways shall be made smooth:
      καὶ αἱ τραχεῖαι εἰς ὁδοὺς λείας

5. Unjust judge  - pollution of the conscience.

5. _[53] Ἄδικος δικαστὴς μεμολυσμένη συνείδησις.

6. Terrible it is to be a slave to passions of the flesh.

6. _[54]  Δεινόν ἐστι πάθεσι δουλεύειν σαρκός.

7. If you wish to be free of sadness, be eager to please God.

7. _[55]  Εἰ θέλεις αλυπος ειναι,
 θεῷ ἀρέσκειν σπούδαζε.

8. The one who takes proper thought of himself -
 of him God takes thought.

8. _[56] Ὁ καλῶς φροντίζων ἑαυτοῦ φροντίζεται ὑπὸ θεοῦ.

9. The temperate heart -
  a harbor of contemplative insights.

9. _[57]  Σώφρων καρδία
 λιμὴν θεωρημάτων.

10. If you wish to know who you [truly] are, do not measure yourself against who you were, but rather [against] what you have come to be since the beginning.

10. _[58] Ὅταν θέλῃς σαυτὸν γνῶναι τίς εἶ, μὴ συγκρίνῃς τίς ἦς, ἀλλὰ τί γέγονας ἐξ ἀρχῆς.

11.  A cistern without water -
  the soul that loves fame.

11. _[59]  Λάκκος ανυδρος φιλόδοξος ψυχή.

12. The proud soul - an inn of thieves -
  hates the sound of  knowledge.

12. _[60] Ὑπερήφανος ψυχὴ πανδοχεῖον λῃστῶν,
  μισεῖ δὲ ἦχον γνώσεως.

13. For a true man it is an evil deviation not to know the Scriptures.

13. _[61] Ἀληθοῦς ἀνδρὸς πλάνη κακὴ τὸ μὴ εἰδέναι τὰς Γραφάς.

14. If you fear God
 you will know Him through tears.

14. _[62]  Εἰ φοβῇ τὸν θεόν,
ἐκ τῶν δακρύων γνῶθι.

15. An unbreakable tool  -
  a humble soul.

15. _[63] Ἄρρηκτον ὅπλον
   ταπεινοφροσύνη ψυχῆς.

16. A tree in paradise -
  the man who loves virtue.

16. _[64]  Δένδρον παραδείσου
   φιλάρετος ἀνήρ.

Maxims3_17

17. Jesus Christ is the tree of life: (cf. Pr 3.18)

   Consult him as is proper and you will not ever die.

17. _[65] Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ξύλον ἐστὶ ζωῆς.

 χρῶ αὐτῷ ὡς δεῖ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.

18. The one beneficent towards the truly poor also eats of Christ.

18. _[66]  Εὐεργέτει τοὺς οντως πτωχοὺς καὶ βρώσῃ Χριστόν.

19. True strength  - eating the body of Christ.

19. _[67] Ῥώμη ἀληθὴς τὸ τοῦ Χριστοῦ σῶμα ἐσθίειν.

20. If you love Christ, you will keep his commandments without forgetting. (cf. Jn 14.15)

20. _[68]  Εἰ φιλεῖς τὸν Χριστόν, τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηρεῖν οὐκ ἐπιλήσῃ·

Maxims3_21

21. From their place the beneficent, who are like God, shine forth.

21.ἐκεῖθεν γὰρ ἀναφαίνεται εὐεργέτης μετὰ θεόν.

Maxims3_22

22. The friend in accordance with God - like milk and honey (cf. Ex 3:8, Nu 13:27) flow [his] true words.

22. _[69] Ὁ κατὰ θεὸν φίλος ῥέει γάλα καὶ μέλι τοῖς ἀληθέσι λόγοις,

   23. But the apathetic soul
    will not have such a friend.

23.ῥᾴθυμος δὲ ψυχὴ
   τοιοῦτον οὐχ ἕξει φίλον.

24.  Savage master -
   a pleasure-loving [tempting] thought.

24. _[70] Ὠμὸς δεσπότης
   φιλήδονος λογισμός.

25. Silencing the truth
 is burying gold.

25. _[71]  Σιγᾶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν χρυσόν ἐστι θάπτειν.

26. The one who fears God
   does all in accordance with God.

26. _[72] Ὁ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν
   κατὰ θεὸν πάντα ποιεῖ.
