VALUES in ACTION:
V
ICE, EXCESS and DEFICIENCY:

Furioso

THE Values in Action Project, explores six core virtues that are based on the seven cardinal - that is four classical and three theological - virtues.  These six core virtues are considered to be expressed in twenty-four character strengths that are assigned as subgroups of the six core virtues.

A recent hesitant effort has been made to follow Aristotle's approach (Nicomachean Ethics, Bk. II by identifying vices of opposition, absence or excess that impede strengths. In a brief 2013 essay. “Chris Peterson’s Unfinished Masterwork: The Real Mental Illnesses. Martin Seligman discusses Peterson's (posthumously-discovered) contribution to this effort.  Despite Seligman's rather alarming suggestion that “If fleshed out, [this could be]  a viable alternative to DSM”, it represents an intriguing attempt to use Aristotle as a resource in contemporary psychology.
