Nave and Sanctuary |
THE shrine of St. Augustine in Ramsgate is named for St. Augustine of Canterbury, the Apostle to the English. A monk of Pope Gregory the Greats monastery in Rome, he was sent by Pope Gregory as a missionary to England in 595. The Benedictine monastery of St. Augustines Ramsgate was founded in 1856, the first Benedictine community to be re-established in England after the Reformation. The monks transferred their community to Surrey in 2011, and the abbey church has since became the diocesan shrine of St. Augustine of Canterbury.
