  Nave and Sanctuary


THE shrine of St. Augustine in Ramsgate is named for St. Augustine of Canterbury, the “Apostle to the English”.  A monk of Pope Gregory the Great’s monastery in Rome, he was sent by Pope Gregory as a missionary to England  in 595.  The Benedictine monastery of St. Augustine’s Ramsgate was founded in 1856, the first Benedictine community to be re-established in England after the Reformation. The monks transferred their community to Surrey in 2011, and the abbey church has since became the diocesan shrine of St. Augustine of Canterbury.


 

ABBEY CHURCH (Augustus Pugin)

MONASTERY (Edward and Peter Paul Pugin)

 

THE home and private chapel of Augustus Pugin were given to the monks, and the abbey was extended with the addition of monastic buildings designed by Edward and Peter Paul Pugin.  In 2011the monks transferred their community to Surrey; and the church has since became the diocesan shrine of St. Augustine of Canterbury.
