OVERVIEW
OF CATHOLIC
TEACH.
ON SEX’TY,
CHASTITY,
MARRIAGE,
AND CELIBACY
REQUIRED
READING (Weeks 1
and 2):
1.
Selections from the
Catechism of the Catholic Church on marriage and sexual
morality. We will be considering these texts in both weeks 1 and 2.
Don't attempt a deep study of these texts this first time through: our goal is
to acquire a general overview of the Church's teaching on human sexuality.
We will be studying these texts in more detail in later sections of this course.
CREATION (§ 355-384)
FALL
(§ 385-421)
ETERNAL LIFE (§
1020-1060)
2.
Papal Encyclical
Lumen Fidei, (especially § 52-54)
Note how Pope Francis emphasizes the traditional goods of marriage,
especially fidelity, lifetime commitment, fertility, and complimentarity.
QUESTIONS
for
REFLECTION:
1. What does the Catechism of The Catholic Church mean by
the term “disordered”? What might be a better English translation of the Latin
term “inordinatio”?
2. What does Pope Benedict mean by “eros”? Does he regard
eros as a useful or positive concept for Christian moral and spiritual
theology?
SUPPLEMENTARY
(i.e not required)
READING:
1.
Selections from the
1962
Baltimore
Catechism on “vocation”. Note how marriage and
consecrated celibacy are portrayed and contrasted in this very popular
pre-Vatican II catechism.
