APPENDIX VII, Assessing Dangerousness: Violence by Sexual Offenders, Batterers, and Child Abusers, California: Sage Publications, 1995.

ØApproximately 70% of murdered woman are killed by a husband or lover or estranged lover.

ØApproximately two thirds of those murdered by intimate partners or ex-partners had been physically abused before they were killed.

ØA history of female battering is the most usual pattern of homicide of a female partner or ex-partner followed by suicide of the perpetrator.

ØWomen are often highly at risk for homicide after they have left their abusers or when they make it clear to them that they are leaving them for good.

ØThe majority of battered women eventually do leave their abusers.

RISK factors for homicide of the battered woman include:

  1. Use of weapons in prior abusive incidents.

  2. Threats with weapons.

  3. Threats to kill.

  4. Life threatening injury in prior abusive incidents.

  5. Prior criminal history.

  6. Violence outside the home.

  7. Fantasies of homicide and suicide.

  8. Drug or alcohol abuse.

  9. Forced sex of female partner.

10. Extreme jealousy and dominance.
