ΠΑΡΑΙΝΕΣΙΣ ΠΡΟΣ ΜΟΝΑΧΟΥΣ

1. As a bird flying smoothly cuts through the air,

   so a soul takes to the heights when winged with the virtues. [M9]

1. [M.9]  ̔̀ τρόπον ὄρνεον καλῶς ἱπτάμενον τέμνει τὸν ἀέρα,

  οὕτως ψυχὴ ὑψοῦται πτερωθεῖσα ταῖς ἀρεταις.

 

 

2. Just as a cloud hinders the sun’s rays from shining, so does anger extinguish the radiance of the soul. [M10]

2. [M.10]  ̔́Ωσπερ νεφέλη κωλύει φαίνειν τἀς τοῦ ἡλίου ἀκτίνας, οὕτως ὀργὴ σβέννυσι τὸ φέγγος τῆς ψυχῆς

 

 

3. As raindrops cannot be counted, so can the wisdom of God not be fathomed (cf. Rom. 11: 33). [M11]

3. [M.11]  ̔̀Ον τρόπον ὑετοῦ σταγόνες ἀμέτρητοι, οὕτως σοφία Θεοῦ ἀνεξιχνίαστος.

 

 

4. Just as it is impossible to transport water to a height without it being enclosed on all sides so it has no way out, so too the mind cannot ponder sublime realities and be in the realm of the incorporeals without having purified the heart, for it must turn towards those things by which it is held.8 [M12]

4. [M.12] ̔́Ωσπερ οὐκ ἔστιν ὕδωρ ἀνενέγκαι εἰς ὕψος μὴ συνκλεισθὲν πανταχόθεν τοῦ μὴ ἔχειν ἔκνασιν, οὕτως καὶ νοῦς οὐκ ἂν φρομήσῃ {ξοδ. - σει}   τὰ,ἄνω καὶ ἐν χώρᾳ γένηται τῶν ἀσωμάτων {φο 62 ᾐ, μὴ καθαρεύσας καρδίαν, ἐπιστραφῆναι γὰρ αὐτὸν δεῖ πρὸς ἐκεῖνα ὑφ̓ ὦν κεκράτηται.

 

 

5. Just as it is impossible to see one’s own image in water that has been disturbed, so too the mind will not be able to see the Lord as in a mirror without having set right its interior state and without having purified the soul of passionate attachments to material things. [M13]

5. [M.13]  ́ͅΩσπερ οὐκ ἔστι κατιδεῖν ἐν ὕδατι σαλευομένῳ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ εἰκόνα, οὕτω καὶ νο͂ς οὐ δυνήσεται τὸν Κυρίον ὡς ἐν ἐσόπτρῳ [π.202] ἰδεῖν, μὴ τὰ ἔνδον διορθωσάμενος καὶ ἐκκαθάρος τὴν ψυχὴν τῶν ὑλικῶν παθημάτων.

 

 

6. As it is impossible to build a tower without a skilled workman, so it is impossible to acquire the wisdom of God without warfare, and impossible to conduct the warfare successfully without prudence, and impossible to find prudence without yearning and zeal for the divine.9 [M14]

6. [M.14]  ̔Ως οὐκ ἔστι πύργον οἰκοδομῆσαι ἄνευ τεχνίτου, οὕτως οὐκ ἔστι κτήσασθαι Θεοῦ σοφίαν ἄνευ πολέμου, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι κατορθῶσαι τὸν πόλεμον χωρὶς φρονήσεως, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν εὑρεῖν φρόνησιν ἄνευ πόθου περὶ τὸ θεῖον καὶ σπουδῆς.

 

 

7. Just as it is impossible for a tree to produce fruit unless it has remained for awhile in the earth with rain to water it, so too will a man not produce (p.220) the perfect fruit of righteousness unless he has born patiently with afflictions and trials for the sake of the truth. [M15]

7. [M.15]  ̔́Ωσπερ οὐκ ἔστι ποιῆσαι δένδρον καρπὸν μὴ χρονίσαν ἐν τῇ γῇ ἔχον τοῦ ὑετοῦ τἠν ἀρδείαν· οὕτως καὶ ἄνθρωπος οὐ ποιήσει καρπὸν δικαιοσύνης τέλειον, μὴ ὑπομείνας θλίψεις καὶ πειρασμοὺς διὰ τὴν ἀλήθειαν.

 

 

8. Just as it is impossible for a vessel to be made of iron unless it be cast in a furnace, so it is impossible for someone to become holy without trials and without enduring the temptations of the adversary. [M16]

8. [M.16]  ̔́Ωσπερ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ σιδήρου γενέσθαι σκεῦος, μὴ βληθὲν ἐν καμίνῳ· οὕτως οὐκ ἔστι γενέσθαι ὅσιον τινὰ ἄνευ πειρατηρίων καὶ πειρασμῶν τοῦ ὑπεναντίου, μὴ καρτερήσαντα.

 

 

9. He who flees a beneficial temptation flees eternal life. [M7]

9. [M.17].  ̔Ο φεύγων πειρασμὸν ἐπωφελη, φεύγει ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

 

 

10. He who does not endure affliction for the sake of the Lord will not see the bridal chamber of Christ. [M8]

10. [M.18] ̔Ο μὴ ὑποφέρων θλίψιν διὰ τὸν Κυρίον, οὐκ ὄψεται τὸν νυμφῶνα τοῦ Χριστου.

 

 

11. Just as water makes a plant grow, so does affliction make righteousness grow in the soul of the just. [M9]

11. [M.19].  {Φο 63}   ̔́Ωσπερ ὕδωρ αὔξει φυτὸν, οὕτως θλίψις δικαιοσύνην αὔξει ἐν ψυχῇ δικαίου.

 

 

12. One who does not bruise and subdue his flesh (cf. 1 Cor. 9: 27), but satisfies the pleasures of the flesh will not enjoy the supper of truth nor will he wear the garment of light. [M20]

12. [M.20].  ̔Ο μη ὑπωπισ́ζων καὶ δουλαγωγῶν σάρκας αὐτοῦ, αλλ̓ ἐκτελῶν ἐπιθυμίας σαρκικὰς, οὐ δειπνήσει τὸν ἀληθινὸν δεῖπνον, ουδὲ ἐνδύσεται ἔνδυμια θωτεινόν.

 

 

13. Just as it is not the sun’s fault that it provides no light to the blind man, for dim-sightedness of the eyes is the cause, so too let the one deprived of the sun of righteousness hold himself to blame, for this will happen to him as the result of a vain way of life. [M21]

13. [M.21].  ̔́Ωσπερ οὐκ ἔστιν αἴτιος ὁ ἥλιος τῳ τυφλῷ μὴ φωτίζων αὐτὸν, ἡ γὰρ ἀμβλυωρία τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αἰτία εστὶν· οὕτως καὶ ὁ ἐστερημένος τοῦ ἡλίου τῆς δικαιοσύνης ἑαυτὸν καταμεμφέσθω, ἐκ γὰρ ματαίας ἀναστροφῆς συμβήσεται αὐτῷ τοῦτο.

 

 

14. Just as a dead man feels no praise or insult, so a man of faith disdains esteem and dishonour. [M22]

14. [M.22].  ̔́Ωσπερ οὐκ αἰσθάνεται νεκρὸς ἐπαινον ἢ ὕβρεως, οὕτως ἀνὴρ πιστὸς δόξης καὶ ἀτιμίας καταφρονεῖ.

 

 

15. Just as a spring that purifies itself of the surrounding material elements flows with clear water, so too the mind that purifies itself of anger, resentment, and bodily concern discovers pure knowledge and produces a sweet longing in the one who has acquired it. [M23]

15. [M.23].  ̔́Ωσπερ πηγὴ καθαιρομένη τῶν περικειμένων ὑλῶν, διαυγὲς ὕδωρ ρέει· οὕτως καὶ νοῦς καθαιρόμενος ἀπὸ ὀργῆς καὶ μνησικακίας καὶ φροντίδος σωματικῆς, καθαρὰν γνῶσιν εὑρίσκει, καὶ γλυκὺν πόθον ποιεῖ τῷ κεκτημένῳ

 

 

16. Just as the man who has started out to walk on the road, if he does not complete the journey but stops midway on the road becomes a laughing stock and falls short of both goals, namely, the one he had set out from and the one towards which he started, so the one who has begun to proceed by the divine law, if he does not complete the course, because he has become reprobate and overcome with laughter, will be deprived of eternal life. [M24]

16. [M.24].   ̔́Ωσπερ ὁ ἐν ὁδ̈͂ ἀρξάμενος βαδίζειν, ἑὰν μὴ τελειώσῃ τὴν ὁδοπορίαν· ἀλλ̀ ἐν μέσῃ τῇ ὁδῳ παύσηται, εὐκαταγέλαστος γενόμενος ἀμφοτέρων ἐκπεσεῖται τῶν σκοπῶν καὶ τὴν, ἀφ̀ ῇς ἐξελήλυθεν καὶ εἰς ἣν ώρμησεν· οὕτως {φο 63ῃ}   ὁ ἐναρξάμενος θείῳ νόμῳ πορεύεσθαι, ἐὰν μὴ τελέσῃ τὸν δρόμον, ἀδόκιμος καὶ πλήρης γέλωτος γενόμενος, τῆς ἀϊδίου ζωῆς στερηθήσεται.

 

 

17. [1236B] As it is impossible for an athlete to receive the crown without having competed (cf. 2 Tim. 2: 5), so it is impossible to become a Christian without a struggle.

17. {1236B=8}   ̔Ως ἀδύνατόν ἐστιν ἀθλητὴν στεφανωθῆναι μὴ παλαίσαντα, οὕτως οὐκ ἔστι γενέσθαι Χριστιανὸν ἄνευ ἀγώων.

 

 

18. As the balance is not even when one side is weighted, so it is impossible (p.221) to fulfil the commandment of God when the concerns of the flesh prevail (cf. Rom. 8: 6–7). [1236C]

18.{9=1236C}   ̔Ως οὐκ ἔστιν ἴσος ὁ ζυγὸς, βαροῦντος τοῦ ἑνὸς μέρους, οὕτως οὐκ ἔστι κατορθῶσαι ἐντολὴν Θεοῦ, κατακρατοῦντος του σαρκικοῦ φρονήματος.

 

 

19. Just as it is impossible to learn a skill without having persistently devoted one’s time to it, so it is impossible to acquire prayer without having devoted oneself to God with an upright heart.

19. [79.1236ξ] {10}   ̔́Ωσπερ οὐκ ἔστι μαθεῖν τέχνην, μὴ σχολάσαντα ἐπιμελῶς, οὕτως οὐκ ἔστι κτήσασθαι προσευχὴν μὴ προσκαρτερήσαντα τῷ Θεῷ ἐν εὐθείᾳ καρδιᾳ.

 

 

20. The one who has not attained pure prayer has no weapon for battle.

20. {11}   ̔Ο μὴ κεκτημένος προσευχὴν καθαρὰν, οὐκ ἔχει ὅπλον ἐις πόλεμον.

 

 

 

 

21. One who has not been adorned and cleansed by the virtues of God will be an abode for the demons (cf. Matt. 12: 44). [123 7A]

21. [79.1237α] ={12}   ̔Ο κεκοσμημένος, καὶ σεαρωμένος ἀπὸ ἀρετῶν Θεοῦ, κατοικητήριον ἔσται δαιμόνων.

 

 

22. As it is impossible for a king to dwell in the house of a poor man, so Christ will not dwell in a soul defiled by sin.

22. {13}   ̔Ως οὐκ ἔστι κατοικῆσαι βασιλέα ἐν οἴκῳ πένητος, οὕτως οὐ κατοικήσει Χριστὸς ἐν ψυχῇ ῥερυπωμένῃ ἀπὸ ἁμαρτίας.

 

 

23. Just as a wilderness area is brought under cultivation with diligent dedication to work, so a soul that has gone wild in its sins can be tamed if it shall conduct itself by the law of God.

23. {14}   ̔́Ωσπερ ἀνήμερος τόπος ἡμεροῦται δι' ἐπιμελοῦς φιλεργίας, οὕτως ψυχὴν ἀγριωθεῖσα ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ἡμεροῦται δἰ ἐπιμελοῦς φιλεργίας, οὕτως ψυχῂ ἀγριωθεῖσα ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ἡμεροῦται, εἰ νόμῳ Θεοῦ πολιτεύσεται.

 

 

24. Just as a rock in the ocean remains steady and unshaken even when beaten upon by waves, so too the one who is upright in the virtues and completely blended [anakrasis] with them cannot be beaten upon by the devil.

24. {15}   ̔́Ωσπερ πέτρα οὐσα ἐν θαλάσσῃ ἑδραία μένει, καὶ ἀσάλευτος κατακρουομένη ὑπὸ κυμάτων, οὕτω καὶ ὁ τὰς ἀρετὰς κατορθώσας, καὶ ταύταις ὅλως ἀνακραθεὶς, οὐ μὴ σαλευθῇ ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου.

 

 

25 Just as a physician considers [which] medication [is best] for the treatment of a disease, so too the knowledge of God, when it is closely preserved, teaches the one who takes part in it how it may be guarded and progress to greater things. [1237B]

25. {16}   ̔́Ωσπερ ἰατρος πρὸς τὴν τοῦ πάθους θεραπείαν ἐπινοεῖ τὸ φάρμακον, οὕτως καὶ ἡ γνῶσις του Θεοῦ συντηρουμένη διδάσκει τὸν μετέχοντα αὐτῆς, ὅπως ἂν δια φυλαχθῇ, καὶ ἐπὶ μείζονα προέλθοι.

 

 

26. Just as a torrent makes a passage for itself, so too a sin that has been accepted works the destruction of the one who has acquired it.

26. [79.1237β] {17}   ̔́Ωσπερ χαράδρα  ἑαυτῆς ἐμποεῖται τὴν διόδον οὕτω καὶ ἁμαρτία παραδεχθεῖσα κατεργάζεται τοῦ κεκτημένου αὐτῆς τὴν ἀπώλειαν.

 

 

27. Just as it is impossible for a deer that has fallen into a net to escape easily, so one who satisfies his desires and conducts his life in this world cannot escape sin, for evil desires and pleasures are unbreakable cords.

27. {18}   ̔Ωσ οὐκ ἔστιν εἰς λίνα ἐμπεσόντα ἔλαφον εὐχερῶς ἐκφυγεῖν, οὕτως οὐ μὴ φύγῃ ἁμαρτίαν ὁ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας ἐκτελῶν, καὶ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ τούτῳ ἀναστρεφόμενος· ἐπιθυμίαι γὰρ πονηραὶ, καὶ ἡδοναὶ σειραὶ δύσλυτοι.

 

 

28. Just as a vine which does not produce good fruit is cut down so as not to leave its place unproductive (cf. Matt. 3: 10), so too anyone who does not produce the fruit of the Spirit (cf. Gal. 5:22) will be uprooted by Christ.

28. {19}   ̔́Ωσπερ ἅμπελος, μὴ ποιοῦσα καρποὺς καλοὺς, ἐκκόπτεται ἵνα μὴ τὸν τόπον καταργῇ, οὕτως καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου ἐκριζωθήσεται πᾶς ὁ μὴ ποιῶν καρποὺς Πνεύματος ἁγίου.

 

 

29. As it is impossible for a person struck by an arrow not to be injured, so it is impossible for the monk who has accepted a wicked thought not to be wounded. [12 37C]

29. {20}   ̔Ως ἀμήχανον, μὴ βλαβ͂ναι ἄνθρωπον κρουσθέντα ὑπὸ βέλους, οὕτως ἀδύνατον ἐστι, μοναχὸν καταδεξάμενον λογισμὸν πονηρὸν μὴ τρωθῆναι.

 

 

30. Just as one who leaves the straight path loses his way in unfamiliar territory since he does not know where he is going, so too a person goes astray when he does not believe in the consubstantial Trinity.

30. {[79.1237ξ =21}   ̔́Ωσπερ ὁ ἐξελθὼν ὁδοῦ εὐθείας, πλανᾶται ἐν ἀλλοδαπῇ χώρᾳ, μὴ ἐπιτάμενος ποῦ πορεύεται, οὕτω καὶ ἄνθρωπος πλανᾶται μὴ πιστεύων εἰς ὁμούσιον Τριάδα.

 

 

31. Just as an individual with many distinct parts is one in nature, so too the Holy Trinity, even though it has distinctions both with regard to names and hypostases, is one in nature. You could not comprehend the nature of God, not even if you flew on wings. God is incomprehensible, just as he is also our creator.

31. {22}   ̔́Ωσπερ τις εἰς πολλὰ διαιρούμενος ἕν ἐστι τῇ φύσει, οὕτως καὶ ἡ ἁγία. Τριὰς, εἰ καὶ τοῖς ὀνόμασι καὶ ταῖς ὑποστάσει διῄρηται, τῇ φύσει μία ἐστί.  Θεοῦ φύσιν οὐ καταλάβοις, οὐδ' εἰ πτεροῖς πετόμενος, ὁ Θεὸς ἀκατάληπτός ἐστι, διὸ καὶ κτίστης ἡμῶν ἐστιν.

 

 

32. Just as the fabricated vessel is ignorant of the one who fabricated its origin and its nature, so too a human being will be incapable of discovering the nature or origin of God. [12 37D]

32. {23}   ̔́Ωσπερ τὸ κατασκευαζόμενον σκεῦος ἀγνοεῖ τοῦ κατασκευάσαντος τὴν ἀρχὴν καὶ τὴν φύσιν, οὕτω καὶ ἄνθρωπος οὐ δυνησεται ἐξευρεῖν Θεοῦ φύσιν ἢ ἀρχήν.

 

 

33. Restrain your curiosity about the Trinity; only believe and offer worship, for one who displays curiosity does not believe.

33. {24}   Τριάδα μὴ περιεγράζο, ἀλλὰ μόνον πίστευε, καὶ [79.1237δ] προσκύνει· ὁ γὰρ περιεγραζόμενος οὐ πιστεύει.

 

 

34. Acquire wisdom and not money; value the radiant garment of Christ our Lord more than any robe of fine linen, because it will be of no use to you on the day of your death.

34. {25}   Κτήσασθε σοφίαν καὶ μὴ ἁργύριον, ποιήσατε φωτεινὸν ἔνδυμα Χριστοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν στολὴν βυσσίνην, ὅτι οὐκ ὠφελήσει ὑπάρχοντα ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θανάτου.

 

 

35. Just as fire consumes a thicket, so will every sinner be consumed by the eternal fire and will be unable to have an end of it, for he will be tormented immortally.

35. {26}   ̔́Ωσπερ πῦρ καταναλίσκει δρυμὸν, οὕτω καταναλωθήσεται πᾶς ἁμαρτωλὸς ὑπὸ τοῦ αἰωνίου πυρὸς,, καὶ οὐ δύναται τελευτῆσαι· ἀθάνατα γὰρ βασανισθήσεται.

 

 

36. It is not a great thing, if we become just, for that which we were originally created by God, namely very good (Gen. 1: 31), this we shall become, [1 240A]

36. {27}   Οὐδὲν μέγα, εἰ γινόμεθα δίκαιοι, ὃ γὰρ ἐκτίσθημεν ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ πρῶτον, καλοὶ λίαν, τοῦτο γενησόμεθα.

 

 

37. One who lives contrary to nature does not keep the commandments of God.

37. [79.1240α] {28}   ̔Ο παρὰ φύσιν βιῶν, οὐ τηρεῖ ἐντολὰς Θεοῦ.

 

 

38. To fear the Lord is all wisdom (cf. Ecclus. 1: 14), and all instruction that does not teach the law of the Lord is folly and foolishness.

38. {29}   Πᾶσα σοφία φοβεῖσθαι τὸν Κύριον, πᾶσα δὲ παιδεία ἡ μὴ διδάσκουσα νόμον Κυρίου, μωρία ἐστὶ καὶ ἀφροσύνη.

 

 

39. Faith and baptism will not save you from the eternal fire without works of righteousness (cf. Jas. 2: 14–26). If you have placed yourself under the command of Christ, keep his commandments, and if you believe in the things to come, seek after the eternal glory and fear the fiery sword (Gen. 3:24). But if you do carry out the commands of God, do not call yourself a believer.

39. {30}   Οὐ ῥύσεται πίστις καὶ βάπτισμα τοῦ αἰωνίου πυρὸς, χωρὶς ἔργων δικαιοσύνης.  Εἱ γὰρ συνετάξω τῷ Χριστῷ, τήρει τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰ πιστεύεις τὰ μέλλοντα, ἀντιποιοῦ τῆς δόξης τῆς αἰωνίου, καὶ φοβήθητι τὴν φλογίνην ῥομφαίαν· εἰ δὲ οὐ κατορθοῖς τὰ προστάγματα τοῦ Θεοῦ, μὴ λέγε πιστὸν σεαυτὸν.

 

 

40. All creation obeys the command of God; man for whom all things were made is alone in his disobedience. [1240B]

40. {31}   Πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις τῷ προστάγματι τοῦ Θεοῦ πειθαρχεῖ, ὁ δὲ ἄνθρωπος μόνος ἀπειθεῖ, δι' ὃν γέγονε τὰ πάντα.

 

 

41. We offer nothing to God if we keep ourselves pure, but we provide for ourselves life and the ineffable rest of the eternal goods.

41. [79.1240β] {32}   Οὐδὲν παρέξομεν Θεῷ εἰ τηρήσομεν ἑαυτοὺς ἁγνοὺς, ἀλλ' ἑαυτοῖς ζωὴν προξενήσομεν, καὶ ἀπόλαυσιν ἀνεκλάλητον τῶν αἰωνίων ἀγαθῶν.

 

 

42. Do not say: I am unable, because of my father or mother or wife or children or someone else, to keep the commandment of God (cf. Luke (p.223) 14: 20), for those people will not save you from the wrath that is at hand and from the undying worm (cf. Isa. 66: 24, Mark 9: 48). Let anyone opposed to the fulfilment of the commandments of God and the virtues be to you someone abominable and hated; nor is it good to eat with such a person.

42. {33}   Μὴ εἴπῃς, ὅτι Οὐ δύναμαι τηρῆσαι ἢ διὰ πατέρα, ἢ διὰ μητέρα, ἢ διὰ γυναῖκα, ἢ διὰ τέκνα, ἢ διὰ τέκνα, ἢ δι' ἕτερον τινα, τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐντολὴν, ὐ γὰρ ἐκεῖνοί σε ῥύσονται τῆς ἐπικειμένης ὀργῆς, καὶ τοῦ ἀτελευτήτου σκώληκος.  ̓́Εστω δέ σοι πᾶς ὁ ἐναντιούμενος πρὸς κατόρθωσιν Θεοῦ, καὶ ἀρετῶν, βοελυκτος καὶ μισητὸς τῷ τοιούτῳ μηδὲ συνεσθίειν καλόν,
