MONKS

ΠΑΡΑΙΝΕΣΙΣ ΠΡΟΣ ΜΟΝΑΧΟΥΣ

1. [1236A] Immoderation in food is cut away by fasting;

  The intemperance of fornication is stripped off by abstinence with prayer.

[79.1236α] {1} ̓Ακρασίαν βρωμ́των περικόπτει νηστεία,

ἀκολασίαν δὲ πορνείας περιαιρεῖ ἐγκράτεια μετὰ προσευχῆς.

 

 

2. Avarice, the mother of idolatry is brought to an end by almsgiving;

  Anxiety over corporeal matters is cut away by hope in God.

{2} Φιλαργυρίαν τὴν τῆς εἰδωλατρίας Μητέρα συντέλλει ἀκτημοσύνη,

μέριμναν δὲ σωματικὴν περικόπτει ἐλπὶς ̔ εἰς Θεόν.

 

 

3. The wandering nous is gathered back through reading the oracles of God,
   and through vigils with prayer.

{3} Πλανώμενον νοῦν συντέλλει ἀνάγνωσις λογίων Θεοῦ καὶ ἀγρυνία μετὰ προσευχῆς.

 

 

4. The [sudden] inrush of indignation
    is quieted by patience and psalmody.

{4Θυμοῦ δὲ καταρομὴν, καταραΰνει μακροθυμία, και ψαλμωδία.

 

 

5. Acedia is checked by patient endurance with tears;

   Worldly sorrow is silenced by hatred of pleasures

{5̓Ακηδίαν καταστέλλει ὑπομονὴ, καὶ δάκρυα,

λύπην δ̀ κοσμικὴν κατασιγάζει τὸ πρὸς τὰς ἡδονὰς μῖσος.

 

 

6. Hospitality is obtained through humility together with renunciation of love of power and preeminence

  Pride, the primordial vice, [1236B] that abomination before the Lord (Lk 16.15) which God Himself opposes, is put down by immeasurable humility:

– [humility] which says, ‘I am dust and ashes’ (Gen. 18: 27; cf. Job 30: 15; 42: 6), and again, ‘Unless the Lord builds the house the builder labors’ and attempts to guard it ‘in vain’ (Ps 126.1).

{6}   Φιλοξενίαν κτᾶται ταπεινοφροσυνη, καὶ φιλαρχίας, καὶ ὑπεροχῆς ἀποστροφὴ,

 ὑπερηφανίαν δὲ, τὸ αῤχαῖον [79.1236β]  κακὸν, τὸ βδελυκτὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, ᾗ ἀνθίσταται καὶ ὁ Θεὸς, καταπαύει ταπεινοφροσύνη ἁμέτρητος,

 ἡ λέγουσα·  <  ̓Εγὼ εἰμὶ γῆ καὶ σποδός.>  Καὶ πάλιν·  <  ̓εὰν μὴ Κύριος οἰκοδομήσῃ οἶκον, εἰς μάτην ἐκοπίασεν, ὁοἰκοδομῶν,> καὶ φυλάττειν πειρώμενος.

 

 

7. Just as it is not possible to purify agitated water unless it remain undisturbed,

 even so a monk cannot know [his innermost] state without tranquility. [hesuchia]

{7}   ̔Ως οὐκ ἔστι τεθολωμένον ὕδωρ  καθαρεῦσαι μὴ μεῖναν ἀσάλευτον,

οὕτως οὐκ ἔστι μοναχοῦ κατάστασιν ἐπιγνῶναι, ἄνευ ἡσυχίας.

 

 

8. Loquacity disturbs a soul;
   immoderate napping thickens the mind

8. [M.1.  fo.61h]  Πολυλογία ταράσει ψυχὴν,

νυσταγμὸς δὲ ἀμέτρητος παχύνει διάνοιαν.

 

 

9. Roaming desire undermines the nous’ innocence. [M2]

9. [M2 p.201] >. ρεμβασμὸς ἐπιθυμίας μεταλλεύει νοῦν ἄκακον.

 

 

10. Unbalanced laughter obliterates a humble disposition. [M3]

10. [M3]  γέλως ἀκρατὴς συνεσταλμένον ἦθος ἀφανίζει.

 

 

11. Meetings with many people render good habit[s] muddy, while speaking evil drives us away from peace. [M4]

11. [M4]  Συντυχίαι πολλῶν ἕξιν ὀρθὴν ἐπιθολοῦσι, καταλαλιαὶ δὲ ἀπελαύνουσιν ἡμᾶς τῆς εἰρήνης.

 

 

12. An encounter with evil people is like a man struck by arrows, who if he continues to be pierced will hand over his life as well. [M5]

12. [M5] κακῶν συντυχία ἔοικεν ἀνδρὶ κατανυττομένῳ̈ ὑπὸ {fo 62}   βελῶν, ὅστις ἐὰν χρονίσῃ κατακεντούμενος, προσθήσει καὶ τὴν ζωὴν αὐτοῦ.

 

 

13. If you have spent the entire course of your life in a monastery but have not acquired virtue, which gives assurance to your intellect that you have become a son of God (cf. Gal. 3: 26) and have passed from death to life (cf. John 5: 24) because the Lord dwells within you, do not expect to inherit the kingdom of heaven (cf. 1 Cor. 6: 9–10, etc.). [M6]

13. [M6]  ̓Εὰν πάντα σου τὸν χρόνον τῆς ζωῆς διάξης ἐν μοναστηρίῳ, μὴ κτήσῃ δὲ ἀρετὴν πληροφοροῦσάν σου τὴν διάνοιαν, ὅτι ἐγένου υἱὸς θεοῦ καὶ μεταβέβηκας ἐκ του θανάτου εἰς τὴν ζωὴν, οἰκήσαντος τοῦ Κυρίου ἐν σοὶ μὴ προσδοκήσῃς κληρονομῆσαι βασιλείαν οὐρανῶν.

 

 

14. Eagerness, yearning, and bodily mortification cultivate tears, while tears wipe the soul clean of sins, after the fashion of a whetstone wiping the rust from iron. [M7]

14. [M.7].  Σπουδὴ καὶ πόθος καὶ σώματος νέκρωσις δάκρυα γεωργεῖ, τὰ δὲ δάκρυα ἀποσμήχει τἠν ψυχὴν ἀπο τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν, ὃν τρόπον ἐπαίρει ἡ ἀκόνὴ τὸν ἰὸν τοῦ σιδήρου.

 

 

15. Sweet is pleasure, but terrible is the outer darkness (cf. Matt. 8:12; 22:1 3; 25: 30);

 difficult to achieve is virtue, but unspeakable is the glory of the saints and the just. [M8]

15. [M.8]  ̔Ηδεῖα ἡ ἡδονὴ, ἀλλὰ δεινὸν τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον· δυσκατόρθωτος ἡ ἀρετὴ, ἀλλ̀ ἀνεκλάλητος ἡ δόξα τῶν ἁγίων καὶ δικαίων.

 

 

16. Just as one who hears the teaching of God but does not perform it will receive a severe beating (cf. Luke 12: 48) for knowing the will of the Lord but not performing it;
       and all who reject the words of God will be punished as disobedient:

  even so, one who hears and performs the will of the Lord is blessed, for he will become a partaker of eternal life. Amen. [M.p.203]

16. {[M.p.203; fo 65}   Πῶς ὁ ἀκούων διδαχὴν Θεου καὶ μὴ ποιῶν, δαρήσετι πολλὰς [cf. Lk 12. 47] ὃ εἰδὼς τὸ θέλημα Κυρίου καὶ μὴ ποιήσας,
    καὶ πᾶς ὁ ἀποστρεφόμενος τὰ λόγια τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὡς ἀπειθἠς τιμωρηθήσεται·
{fo 65ῃ} 

ὁ δὲ ἀκούων καὶ ποιῶν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Κυρίου μακάριος, ότι γενήσεται μέτοχος ζωῆς αἰωνόου.  ̓Αμεν.
