THE DEVOTIO MODERNA
 and
THE BRETHREN
of the
COMMON LIFE

Illum.MS. Med. Text,
Amiens 1547

FOUNDED by Gert de Groote ca. 1370, the Brethren of the Common Life eventually formed both a lay confraternity and an order of Augustinian Canons Regular.  Strongly influenced by the mysticism of Ruysbroeck, the piety of the devotio moderna  is exemplified by the Imitation of Christ, attributed to Thomas á Kempis.
