ASH WEDNESDAY:
Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving

Repent and believe in the Gospel (Mark 1.15)

Remember that you are dust and
 to dust you shall return
(Gen 3.19)

Matthew 6:1-6,16-18

TAKE care (prosechete) not to parade your righteousness before men to attract their notice; by doing this you will lose all reward from your Father in heaven.
So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win men’s admiration. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward.
But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing;  σοῦ δὲ ποιοῦντος ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ γνώτω ἡ ἀριστερά σου τί ποιεῖ ἡ δεξιά σου,

your almsgiving must be in secret,

and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

AND when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them; I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward.
But when you pray, go to your private room and, when you have shut your door, σὺ δὲ ὅταν προσεύχῃ εἴσελθε είς τὸ ταμεῖον σου καὶ κλείσας τὴν θύραν σου

pray to your Father who is in that secret place

and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

WHEN you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward.
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that no one will know you are fasting σὺ δὲ νηστεύων ἄλειψαι σου τὴν κεφαλὴν καὶ τὸ πρόσωπον σου νίψαι, ὅπως μὴ φανῇς τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύων

except your Father who sees all that is done in secret;

and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

Lent1 The Temptation in the Wildersness Mark 1;12-15

THE FIRST SUNDAY of LENT:
Temptation in the Wilderness

Mark 1:12-15    [YEAR B]

THE Spirit drove Jesus out into the wilderness and he remained there for forty days, and was tempted by Satan. He was with the wild beasts, and the angels looked after him.
After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee.
There he proclaimed the Good News from God, saying that  κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ λέγων ὅτι

‘The time has come and the kingdom of God is close at hand.

Repent, and believe the Good News.’

After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee.

Matthew 4:1-11   [YEAR A]

THEN Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  2 And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry.
3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”  4 But he answered, “It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple,  6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, `He will give his angels charge of you,’ and `On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’“  7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, `You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;  9 and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”  10 Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! for it is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

Lent_2_The_Transfiguration

THE SECOND SUNDAY of LENT:
The Transfiguration

Mark 9:2-10

AND after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured: his clothes became dazzlingly white, whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them.
Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus: ‘Rabbi,’ he said ‘it is good for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say; they were so frightened.
And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, καὶ ἐγένετο νεφέλη ἐπισκιάζουσα αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐγένετο φωνὴ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης·

‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’

Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus.
As they came down from the mountain he warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what ‘rising from the dead’ could mean.
