JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE (Aug. 28, 1749 – Mar. 22, 1832), German writer and statesman. His literary works includes epic and lyric poetry, prose and verse drama, memoirs, an autobiography, literary and aesthetic criticism, four novels, and treatises on botany, anatomy, and color. Numerous literary and scientific fragments, more than 10,000 letters, and nearly 3,000 drawings by him exist.
His epic dramatic poem, Faust - A Tragedy, is generally regarded as the greatest work of German literature.
