THE term “French School” has been used to describe a series of related spiritual and theological movements in seventeenth- century France that sought to implement the decrees of the Council of Trent concerning the reform of the clergy and education of the laity. Cum Adolescentium Aetas, the tridentine decree on seminaries, had been promulgated in 1563: however, in the spirit of Gallicanism, the French government and hierarchy refused to permit the establishment of seminaries until 1641. The founders of the French School paved the way for seminaries by initially gathering in informal study groups that met in the salons of patrons such as Mme Barbe Acarie, who was influential in bringing the reformed. Carmelites nuns to Paris
A more formal step forward was the Paris Oratory founded by Cardinal Bérulle in 1613. St. Francis de Sales visited the Oratory, St. Vincent de Paul, founder of the Vincentians/ Lazarists, spent time there; and its later influential members members included Bérulle’s successor as superior, Fr. Charles de Condren, as well as Jacques Olier, founder of the Sulpicians, and St. John Eudes, founder of the Eudists. Each of these individuals made related but unique contributions to this spiritual movement.
