GUIGO II (d. prob. 1188), ninth prior of the Grande Chartreuse from some time after 1173 until 1180. His Scala Claustralium (‘Ladder of Monks’) influenced late medieval and early modern piety, though it was often ascribed to other writers, esp. St Bernard. Guigo’s fourfold ‘spiritual exercise’, consisting of reading, meditation, prayer, contemplation, was widely adopted, and it contributed to the development of later, more systematic, notions of the spiritual life. There is a lively and original adaptation of the Scala in Middle English.
