The Four Elements

Homo Mundi

HILDEGARD of  BINGEN
HYMN to the HOLY SPIRIT
O Ignis Spiritus Paraclite
[§ 71]

O FIERY Spirit, Paraclete

life of every creature's life

holy transformer and life-giver.

O ignis spiritus paraclite
vita vitae omnis creaturae,
sanctus es vivificando formas

Holy are you, anointing
those dangerously torn:

Holy are you, cleansing
the infected wound.

Sanctus es unguendo
periculose fractos:
sanctus es tergendo
fetida vulnera.

O breath of holiness

O fire of charity

O sweet taste within the breast
and influx within the heart
of the the good odor of the virtues.

O spiraculum sanctitatis,
o ignis caritatis,
o dulcis gustus in pectoribus
et infusio cordium
in bono odore virtutum.

O purist of fountains,

in which we perceive

how God gathered the wanderers

and searched for the lost

O fons purissimus,
in quo consideratur
quod Deus alienos colligit
et perditos requirit.

O breastplate of life and hope for all
members of [our] fellowship

and, O cincture of honesty
save those who are blessed.

O lorica vitae et spes compaginis
membrorum omnium,
et o cingulum honestatis
salva beatos.

Guard those
imprisoned by the enemy

and break the fetters of those
whom the divine power wills to save.

Custodi eos
qui carcerati sunt ab inimico,
et solve ligatos
quos divina vis salvare vult.

O strongest pathway
entering all places

in the heights and on earth
and in all depths

you bring together and unite all things.

O iter fortissimum
quo penetravit omnia;
in altissimis et in terrenis
et in omnibus abyssis
tu omnes componis et colligis.

From you clouds flow,
wind flies,

precious stones receive their qualities

streams are are led in their courses

and earth is refreshed in greenness.

De te nubes fluunt,
ether volat,
lapides humorem habent,
aque rivulos educunt,
et terra viriditatem  sudat.

You always teach those who can know

by inspiration you rejoice the wise.

Tu etiam semper educis doctos
per inspirationem sapiente letificos.

Praise thus be yours

who are the song of praise,

hope and strongest honor

giving the reward of light.

Unde laus tibi sit
qui es sonus laudus,
et gaudium viter,
spes et honor fortissimus
dans premia luics.
