HAIL, bright Star of the Sea, The Gentiles' light Mary, divinely risen. |
1. Ave, præclara maris stella, in lucem gentium, Maria, divinitus orta. |
|
Well done, God's doorway, Whom none can close. The light of truth - Himself the sun of justice Clothed in flesh - You guided into the world. |
2. Euge, Dei porta, quae non aperta, veritatis lumen, ipsum Solem justitiae, indutum carne, ducis in orbem. |
|
Virgin, earth’s jewel, Heaven’s Queen, Forechosen like the sun, Beauty of the moon like lightning, Know that all love you. |
3. Virgo decus mundi, Regina coeli, praeelecta ut sol, pulchra lunaris ut fulgor, agnosce omnes te diligentes. |
|
You, O full of faith, Born a staff of Jesse’s lineage: The patriarchs and prophets Had longed for you. |
4. Te plenam fide, virgam almae stirpis Jesse nascituram, priores desideraverant patres et prophetae. |
|
You, O tree of life, To bear by dew-distilling Spirit, The almond with divine flower, Gabriel sealed you. |
5. Te lignum vitae, sancto rorante pneumate parituram divini floris amygdalum, signavit Gabriel. |
|
You brought the Lamb and reigning King of earth From the rocky desert of Moab To the mountain of Sion’s daughter. |
6. Tu Agnum, regem terrae dominatorem, Moabtici de petra deserti ad montem filiae Sion traduxisti. |
|
You crushed raging Leviathan, That writhing striking serpent, Freeing the world from chastisement of guilt |
7. Tuque furentem Leviathan, serpentem tortuosumque et vectem collidens, damnoso crimine mundum exemisti. |
|
Thus we the remnants of the nations, in honor of your dear memory, who wondrously brought forth the atoning Lamb Who reigns eternally in heaven - Him we call down upon the altar To be mysteriously immolated. |
8. Hinc gentium nos reliquiae, tuae sub cultu memoriae mirum in modum quem es enixa propitiationis Agnum, regnantem coelo aeternaliter, devocamus ad aram, mactandum mysterialiter. |
|
Hence the real Manna of the true Israelite, Visible now to the wondering sons of the true Abraham, Of which Moses’ [manna] was a prefigured type , Now is the veil withdrawn. Pray O Virgin,
That we may be made worthy |
9. Hinc manna verum Israelitis veris,
veri Abrahae filiis admirantibus
quondam Moysi quod typus figurabat:
jam nunc abducto velo datur perspici. Ora, virgo, nos illo pane coeli dignos effici. |
|
Grant that of the sweet spring Foreshadowed by the rock in the desert. We may drink with sincere faith And with girded loins, O lotus of the sea, Behold the brazen serpent on the cross |
10. Fac fontem dulcem,
quem in deserto petra praemonstravit,
degustare cum sincera fide, renesque constringi lotos in mari, anguem aeneum in cruce speculari. |
|
Grant us to draw near the holy fire, Word of the Father Red like flame, Which you carried, Virgin mother, Sandals [cast] from our feet, pure now in mouth, lips, and heart. |
11. Fac igni sancto Patrisque Verbo quod, rubus ut flammam, tu portasti, virgo mater, facta pecuali pelle discinctos pede, mundos labiis cordeque propinquare. |
|
Hear us, For your Son Honoring you, denies you nothing. |
12. Audi nos, nam te Filius nihil negans honorat. |
|
Save us, Jesus, [we,] for whom your virgin mother prays |
13. Salva nos, Jesu, pro quibus Virgo Mater te orat. |
|
Grant that we may see the fountain of goodness, Grant that the purified eyes of our mind may fix on you. |
14. Da fontem boni visere, da purae mentis oculos in te defigere. |
|
After this, the savor of wisdom and life will be comprehensible to the mind, |
15. Quo hausto,
sapientiae saporem vitae valeat mens intelligere, |
|
To ransom the faith of the Christian with works and a blessed end to this sojurn To pass over to you, Creator of the ages.
|
16. Christianismi fidem operibus redimire, beatoque fine ex hujus incolatu, saeculi auctor, ad te transire. |
