THE Basilica of Saint Francis  is the mother church of the Conventual Friars Minor. It was begun in 1228, and consists of two churches known as the Upper and Lower Churches as well as the crypt/shrine of St. Francis. Attached to the basilica is a Franciscan seminary and school of theology.
