While the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. ² And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. ³ Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. ⁴ And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” ⁵ And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” ⁶ And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, ⁷ they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. ⁸ But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” ⁹ For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; ¹⁰ and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.”

 ¹ Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τὸν ὄχλον ἐπικεῖσθαι αὐτῷ καὶ ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἑστὼς παρὰ τὴν λίμνην Γεννησαρέτ͵ ² καὶ εἶδεν δύο πλοῖα ἑστῶτα παρὰ τὴν λίμνην· οἱ δὲ ἁλιεῖς ἀπ΄ αὐτῶν ἀποβάντες ἔπλυνον τὰ δίκτυα. ³ ἐμβὰς δὲ εἰς ἓν τῶν πλοίων͵ ὃ ἦν Σίμωvνος͵ ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἐπαναγαγεῖν ὀλίγον͵ καθίσας δὲ ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου ἐδίδασκεν τοὺς ὄχλους. ⁴ ὡς δὲ ἐπαύσατο λαλῶν͵ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα͵ Ἐπανάγαγε εἰς τὸ βάθος καὶ χαλάσατε τὰ δίκτυα ὑμῶν εἰς ἄγραν. ⁵ καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Σίμων εἶπεν͵ Ἐπιστάτα͵ δι΄ ὅλης νυκτὸς κοπιάσαντες οὐδὲν ἐλάβομεν͵ ἐπὶ δὲ τῷ ῥήματί σου χαλάσω τὰ δίκτυα. ⁶ καὶ τοῦτο ποιήσαντες συνέκλεισαν πλῆθος ἰχθύων πολύ͵ διερρήσσετο δὲ τὰ δίκτυα αὐτῶν. ⁷ καὶ κατένευσαν τοῖς μετόχοις ἐν τῷ ἑτέρῳ πλοίῳ τοῦ ἐλθόντας συλλαβέσθαι αὐτοῖς· καὶ ἦλθαν͵ καὶ ἔπλησαν ἀμφότερα τὰ πλοῖα ὥστε βυθίζεσθαι αὐτά. ⁸ ἰδὼν δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος προσέπεσεν τοῖς γόνασιν Ἰησοῦ λέγων͵ Ἔξελθε ἀπ΄ ἐμοῦ͵ ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἁμαρτωλός εἰμι͵ κύριε· ⁹ θάμβος γὰρ περιέσχεν αὐτὸν καὶ πάντας τοὺς σὺν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τῇ ἄγρᾳ τῶν ἰχθύων ὧν συνέλαβον͵ ¹⁰ ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου͵ οἳ ἦσαν κοινωνοὶ τῷ Σίμωνι. καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Σίμωνα ὁ Ἰησοῦς͵ Μὴ φοβοῦ· ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀνθρώπους ἔσῃ ζωγρῶν.

Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. ⁴¹ And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus’ feet he besought him to come to his house, ⁴² for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. ⁴³ And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and could not be healed by any one, ⁴⁴ came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. ⁴⁵ And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!” ⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me.” ⁴⁷ And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. ⁴⁸ And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” ⁴⁹ While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” ⁵⁰ But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well.” ⁵¹ And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. ⁵² And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping.” ⁵³ And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. ⁵⁴ But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” ⁵⁵ And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat.

  ⁴⁰ Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑποστρέφειν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπεδέξατο αὐτὸν ὁ ὄχλος͵ ἦσαν γὰρ πάντες προσδοκῶντες αὐτόν. ⁴¹ καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦλθεν ἀνὴρ ᾧ ὄνομα Ἰάϊρος͵ καὶ οὗτος ἄρχων τῆς συναγωγῆς ὑπῆρχεν͵ καὶ πεσὼν παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ͵ ⁴² ὅτι θυγάτηρ μονογενὴς ἦν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐτῶν δώδεκα καὶ αὐτὴ ἀπέθνῃσκεν. Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑπάγειν αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι συνέπνιγον αὐτόν. ⁴³ καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα͵ ἥτις [ἰατροῖς προσαναλώσασα ὅλον τὸν βίον] οὐκ ἴσχυ σεν ἀπ΄ οὐδενὸς θεραπευθῆναι͵ ⁴⁴ προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ͵ καὶ παρα χρῆμα ἔστη ἡ ῥύσις τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς. ⁴⁵ καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς͵ Τίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου; ἀρνουμένων δὲ πάντων εἶπεν ὁ Πέτρος͵ Ἐπιστάτα͵ οἱ ὄχλοι συνέχουσίν σε καὶ ἀποθλίβουσιν. ⁴⁶ ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν͵ ῞Ηψατό μού τις͵ ἐγὼ γὰρ ἔγνων δύναμιν ἐξεληλυθυῖαν ἀπ΄ ἐμοῦ. ⁴⁷ ἰδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ὅτι οὐκ ἔλαθεν τρέμουσα ἦλθεν καὶ προσπε σοῦσα αὐτῷ δι΄ ἣν αἰτίαν ἥψατο αὐτοῦ ἀπήγγειλεν ἐνώπιον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ὡς ἰάθη παραχρῆμα. ⁴⁸ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ͵ Θυγάτηρ͵ ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε· πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην. ⁴⁹ Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχεταί τις παρὰ τοῦ ἀρχι συναγώγου λέγων ὅτι Τέθνηκεν ἡ θυγάτηρ σου͵ μηκέτι σκύλλε τὸν διδάσκαλον. ⁵⁰ ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀκούσας ἀπε κρίθη αὐτῷ͵ Μὴ φοβοῦ͵ μόνον πίστευσον͵ καὶ σωθήσεται. ⁵¹ ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν οὐκ ἀφῆκεν εἰσελθεῖν τινα σὺν αὐτῷ εἰ μὴ Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ τὸν πατέρα τῆς παιδὸς καὶ τὴν μητέρα. ⁵² ἔκλαιον δὲ πάντες καὶ ἐκόπτοντο αὐτήν. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν͵ Μὴ κλαίετε͵ οὐ γὰρ ἀπέθανεν ἀλλὰ καθεύδει. ⁵³ καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ͵ εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπέθανεν. ⁵⁴ αὐτὸς δὲ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς ἐφώνησεν λέγων͵ Ἡ παῖς͵ ἔγειρε. ⁵⁵ καὶ ἐπέστρε ψεν τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς͵ καὶ ἀνέστη παραχρῆμα͵ καὶ διέταξεν αὐτῇ δοθῆναι φαγεῖν. ⁵⁶ καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτῆς· ὁ δὲ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν

Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. ²³ And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, ²⁴ but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. ²⁵ And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. ²⁶ But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. ²⁷ But immediately he spoke to them, saying, “Take heart, it is I; have no fear.” ²⁸ And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.” ²⁹ He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; ³⁰ but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” ³¹ Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “O man of little faith, why did you doubt?” ³² And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. ³³ And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

  ²² Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν͵ ἕως οὗ ἀπο λύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους. ²³ καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ΄ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι. ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ. ²⁴ τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν͵ βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων͵ ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος. ²⁵ τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν. ²⁶ οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπα τοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι Φάντασμά ἐστιν͵ καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν. ²⁷ εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν [ὁ Ἰησοῦς] αὐτοῖς λέγων͵ Θαρσεῖτε͵ ἐγώ εἰμι· μὴ φοβεῖσθε. ²⁸ ἀπο κριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν͵ Κύριε͵ εἰ σὺ εἶ͵ κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα· ²⁹ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν͵ Ἐλθέ. καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου ὁ Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν. ³⁰ βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ἐφοβήθη͵ καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξεν λέγων͵ Κύριε͵ σῶσόν με. ³¹ εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ͵ Ὀλιγόπιστε͵ εἰς τί ἐδίστασας; ³² καὶ ἀναβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος. ³³ οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες͵ Ἀληθῶς θεοῦ υἱὸς εἶ.

4._PETER'S_CONFESSION_of_FAITH

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” ¹⁴ And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” ¹⁵ He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” ¹⁶ Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” ¹⁷ And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. ¹⁸ And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. ¹⁹ I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” ²⁰ Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. ²¹ From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. ²² And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” ²³ But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men.” ²⁴ Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. ² And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. ³ And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. ⁴ And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” ⁵ He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” ⁶ When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. ⁷ But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” ⁸ And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. ⁹ And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead.”

  ¹ Καὶ μεθ΄ ἡμέρας ἓξ παραλαμβάνει ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὸν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ͵ καὶ ἀναφέρει αὐτοὺς εἰς ὄρος ὑψηλὸν κατ΄ ἰδίαν. ² καὶ μετεμορφώθη ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν͵ καὶ ἔλαμψεν τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ὡς ὁ ἥλιος͵ τὰ δὲ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο λευκὰ ὡς τὸ φῶς. ³ καὶ ἰδοὺ ὤφθη αὐτοῖς Μωϋσῆς καὶ Ἠλίας συλλαλοῦντες μετ΄ αὐτοῦ. ⁴ ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ͵ Κύριε͵ καλόν ἐστιν ἡμᾶς ὧδε εἶναι· εἰ θέλεις͵ ποιήσω ὧδε τρεῖς σκηνάς͵ σοὶ μίαν καὶ Μωϋσεῖ μίαν καὶ Ἠλίᾳ μίαν. ⁵ ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ νεφέλη φωτεινὴ ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς͵ καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα͵ Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός͵ ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα· ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ. ⁶ καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ἔπεσαν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα. ⁷ καὶ προσῆλ θεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἁψάμενος αὐτῶν εἶπεν͵ Ἐγέρθητε καὶ μὴ φοβεῖσθε. ⁸ ἐπάραντες δὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν οὐδένα εἶδον εἰ μὴ αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον. ⁹ Καὶ καταβαινόντων αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγων͵ Μηδενὶ εἴπητε τὸ ὅραμα ἕως οὗ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκ νεκρῶν ἐγερθῇ.

A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. ²⁵ And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. ²⁶ But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. ²⁷ For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves. ²⁸ “You are those who have continued with me in my trials; ²⁹ and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, ³⁰ that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. ³¹ “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, ³² but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren.” ³³ And he said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” ³⁴ He said, “I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, until you three times deny that you know me.”

  ²⁴ Ἐγένετο δὲ καὶ φιλονεικία ἐν αὐτοῖς͵ τὸ τίς αὐτῶν δοκεῖ εἶναι μείζων. ²⁵ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς͵ Οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν κυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐξουσιάζοντες αὐτῶν εὐεργέται καλοῦνται. ²⁶ ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως͵ ἀλλ΄ ὁ μείζων ἐν ὑμῖν γινέσθω ὡς ὁ νεώτερος͵ καὶ ὁ ἡγούμενος ὡς ὁ διακονῶν. ²⁷ τίς γὰρ μείζων͵ ὁ ἀνα κείμενος ἢ ὁ διακονῶν; οὐχὶ ὁ ἀνακείμενος; ἐγὼ δὲ ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν εἰμι ὡς ὁ διακονῶν. ²⁸ ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετ΄ ἐμοῦ ἐν τοῖς πειρασμοῖς μου· ²⁹ κἀγὼ διατίθεμαι ὑμῖν καθὼς διέθετό μοι ὁ πατήρ μου βασιλείαν ³⁰ ἵνα ἔσθητε καὶ πίνητε ἐπὶ τῆς τρα πέζης μου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου͵ καὶ καθήσεσθε ἐπὶ θρόνων τὰς δώδεκα φυλὰς κρίνοντες τοῦ Ἰσραήλ. ³¹ Σίμων Σίμων͵ ἰδοὺ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐξῃτήσατο ὑμᾶς τοῦ σινιάσαι ὡς τὸν σῖτον· ³² ἐγὼ δὲ ἐδεήθην περὶ σοῦ ἵνα μὴ ἐκλίπῃ ἡ πίστις σου· καὶ σύ ποτε ἐπιστρέψας στήρισον τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου. ³³ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ͵ Κύριε͵ μετὰ σοῦ ἕτοιμός εἰμι καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν καὶ εἰς θάνατον πορεύεσθαι. ³⁴ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν͵ Λέγω σοι͵ Πέτρε͵ οὐ φωνήσει σήμερον ἀλέκτωρ ἕως τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ εἰδέναι.

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” ²⁷ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you; ²⁸ for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. ²⁹ I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” ³⁰ And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. ³¹ Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night; for it is written, `I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ ³² But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” ³³ Peter declared to him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” ³⁴ Jesus said to him, “Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” ³⁵ Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And so said all the disciples. ³⁶ Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.” ³⁷ And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸ Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” ³⁹ And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.” ⁴⁰ And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? ⁴¹ Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ⁴² Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, thy will be done.” ⁴³ And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. ⁴⁵ Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶ Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

  ²⁶ Ἐσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν λαβὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἄρτον καὶ εὐλογήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ δοὺς τοῖς μαθηταῖς εἶπεν͵ Λάβετε φάγετε͵ τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου. ²⁷ καὶ λαβὼν ποτή ριον καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων͵ Πίετε ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες͵ ²⁸ τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης τὸ περὶ πολλῶν ἐκχυννόμενον εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρ τιῶν. ²⁹ λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν͵ οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπ΄ ἄρτι ἐκ τούτου τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ὅταν αὐτὸ πίνω μεθ΄ ὑμῶν καινὸν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ πατρός μου. ³⁰ Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ Ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν. ³¹ Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς͵ Πάντες ὑμεῖς σκανδα λισθήσεσθε ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ͵ γέγραπται γάρ͵ Πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα͵ καὶ διασκορπισθήσονται τὰ πρόβατα τῆς ποίμνης· ³² μετὰ δὲ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλι λαίαν. ³³ ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ͵ Εἰ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται ἐν σοί͵ ἐγὼ οὐδέποτε σκανδαλισθή σομαι. ³⁴ ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς͵ Ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με. ³⁵ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος͵ Κἂν δέῃ με σὺν σοὶ ἀποθανεῖν͵ οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι. ὁμοίως καὶ πάντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἶπαν. ³⁶ Τότε ἔρχεται μετ΄ αὐτῶν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγό μενον Γεθσημανί͵ καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς͵ Καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἕως ἂν ἀπελθὼν ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι. ³⁷ καὶ παρα λαβὼν τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς δύο υἱοὺς Ζεβεδαίου ἤρξατο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν. ³⁸ τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς͵ Περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγο ρεῖτε μετ΄ ἐμοῦ. ³⁹ καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ προσευχόμενος καὶ λέγων͵ Πάτερ μου͵ εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν͵ παρελθάτω ἀπ΄ ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο· πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλ΄ ὡς σύ. ⁴⁰ καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας͵ καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ͵ Οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετ΄ ἐμοῦ; ⁴¹ γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε͵ ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν· τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον ἡ δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής. ⁴² πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο λέγων͵ Πάτερ μου͵ εἰ οὐ δύναται τοῦτο παρελθεῖν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸ πίω͵ γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου. ⁴³ καὶ ἐλθὼν πάλιν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας͵ ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ βεβαρημένοι. ⁴⁴ καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσ ηύξατο ἐκ τρίτου τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπὼν πάλιν. ⁴⁵ τότε ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς͵ Καθεύδετε τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε; ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ἡ ὥρα καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλῶν. ⁴⁶ ἐγείρεσθε͵ ἄγωμεν· ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ὁ παραδιδούς με. ⁴⁷

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance; ⁵⁵ and when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. ⁵⁶ Then a maid, seeing him as he sat in the light and gazing at him, said, “This man also was with him.” ⁵⁷ But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” ⁵⁸ And a little later some one else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” ⁵⁹ And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.” ⁶⁰ But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.” ⁶² And he went out and wept bitterly.

  ⁵⁴ Συλλαβόντες δὲ αὐτὸν ἤγαγον καὶ εἰσήγαγον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως· ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει μακρό θεν. ⁵⁵ περιαψάντων δὲ πῦρ ἐν μέσῳ τῆς αὐλῆς καὶ συγκαθισάντων ἐκάθητο ὁ Πέτρος μέσος αὐτῶν. ⁵⁶ ἰδοῦσα δὲ αὐτὸν παιδίσκη τις καθήμενον πρὸς τὸ φῶς καὶ ἀτενίσασα αὐτῷ εἶπεν͵ Καὶ οὗτος σὺν αὐτῷ ἦν· ⁵⁷ ὁ δὲ ἠρνήσατο λέγων͵ Οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν͵ γύναι. ⁵⁸ καὶ μετὰ βραχὺ ἕτερος ἰδὼν αὐτὸν ἔφη͵ Καὶ σὺ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ· ὁ δὲ Πέτρος ἔφη͵ Ἄνθρωπε͵ οὐκ εἰμί. ⁵⁹ καὶ δια στάσης ὡσεὶ ὥρας μιᾶς ἄλλος τις διϊσχυρίζετο λέγων͵ Ἐπ΄ ἀληθείας καὶ οὗτος μετ΄ αὐτοῦ ἦν͵ καὶ γὰρ Γαλι λαῖός ἐστιν· ⁶⁰ εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Πέτρος͵ Ἄνθρωπε͵ οὐκ οἶδα ὃ λέγεις. καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔτι λαλοῦντος αὐτοῦ ἐφώνησεν ἀλέκτωρ. ⁶¹ καὶ στραφεὶς ὁ κύριος ἐνέβλεψεν τῷ Πέτρῳ͵ καὶ ὑπεμνήσθη ὁ Πέτρος τοῦ ῥήματος τοῦ κυρίου ὡς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι σήμε ρον ἀπαρνήσῃ με τρίς· ⁶² καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς.

¹⁵ When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”

He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.”

He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

¹⁵ Ὅτε οὖν ἠρίστησαν λέγει τῷ Σίμωνι Πέτρῳ ὁ Ἰησοῦς͵ Σίμων Ἰωάννου͵ ἀγαπᾷς με πλέον τούτων;

λέγει αὐτῷ͵ Ναί͵ κύριε͵ σὺ οἶδας ὅτι φιλῶ σε.

 λέγει αὐτῷ͵ Βόσκε τὰ ἀρνία μου.

¹⁶ A second time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”

He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.”

He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

¹⁶ λέγει αὐτῷ πάλιν δεύ τερον͵ Σίμων Ἰωάννου͵ ἀγαπᾷς με;

λέγει αὐτῷ͵ Ναί͵ κύριε͵ σὺ οἶδας ὅτι φιλῶ σε.

 λέγει αὐτῷ͵ Ποίμαινε τὰ πρόβατά μου.

¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.

¹⁷ λέγει αὐτῷ τὸ τρίτον͵ Σίμων Ἰωάννου͵ φιλεῖς με;

ἐλυπήθη ὁ Πέτρος ὅτι εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ τρίτον͵ Φιλεῖς με; καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ͵ Κύριε͵ πάντα σὺ οἶδας͵ σὺ γινώσκεις ὅτι φιλῶ σε.

 λέγει αὐτῷ͵ Βόσκε τὰ πρόβατά μου.

²³ The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” ²⁴ This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. ²⁵ But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

²³ ἐξῆλθεν οὖν οὗτος ὁ λόγος εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὅτι ὁ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος οὐκ ἀποθνῄσκει. οὐκ εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι οὐκ ἀποθνῄσκει͵ ἀλλ΄͵ Ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι[͵ τί πρὸς σέ]; ²⁴ Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ μαθητὴς ὁ μαρτυρῶν περὶ τούτων καὶ γράψας ταῦτα͵ καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς αὐτοῦ ἡ μαρτυρία ἐστίν. ²⁵ Ἔστιν δὲ καὶ ἄλλα πολλὰ ἃ ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς͵ ἅτινα ἐὰν γράφηται καθ΄ ἕν͵ οὐδ΄ αὐτὸν οἶμαι τὸν κόσμον

 “Shall we be runaways, brothers?” And they said to him: “No, but this way you may yet be able to serve the Lord.” And he obeyed the brethren’s voice and went forth alone, saying: “Let none of you come forth with me, but I will go forth alone, having changed my clothing.”

 Δραπετεύωμεν͵ ἀδελφοί; Οἱ δὲ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ· Οὔ͵ ἀλλ΄ ὡς ἕτι σου δυναμένου ὑπηρετεῖν τῷ κυρίῳ. Πεισθεὶς δὲ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ἐξῆλθεν μόνος͵ εἰπών· Μηδεὶς ὑμῶν ἐξερχέσθω σὺν ἐμοί͵ ἀλλ΄ ἐξέρχομαι μόνος͵ μεταμφιάσας τὸ σχῆμά μου.

And as he went out of the city, he saw the Lord entering into Rome. And when he saw him, he said: “Lord, where are you going?” And the Lord said to him: “I go into Rome to be crucified.”

Ὡς δὲ ἐξῄει τὴν πύλην͵ εἶδεν τὸν κύριον εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὴν Ρώμην. Καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν εἶπεν· Κύριε͵ ποῦ ὧδε; Καὶ ὁ κύριος αὐτῷ εἶπεν· Εἰσέρχομαι εἰς τὴν Ρώμην σταυρωθῆναι.

And Peter said to him: “Lord, are you to be crucified again? He said to him: “Yes, Peter, I am to be crucified again.

Καὶ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Κύριε͵ πάλιν σταυροῦσαι; Εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ναί͵ Πέτρε͵ πάλιν σταυροῦμαι.

And Peter came to himself: and having beheld the Lord ascending up into heaven, he returned to Rome, rejoicing, and glorifying the Lord, for having said: “I am to be crucified”: which was about to happen to Peter.

Καὶ ἐλθὼν εἰς ἑαυτὸν ὁ Πέτρος καὶ θεασάμενος τὸν κύριον εἰς οὐρανὸν ἀνελθόντα͵ ὑπέσ τρεψεν εἰς τὴν Ρώμην ἀγαλλιώμενος καὶ δοξάζων τὸν κύριον͵ ὅτι αὐτὸς εἶπεν· Σταυροῦμαι· ὃ εἰς τὸν Πέτρον ἤμελλεν γίνεσθαι.

36. Thus he went up again to the brethren, and told them what he had seen: and they lamented in soul, weeping and saying: “We implore you, Peter, take thought for us who are young.” And Peter said to them: “If it is the Lord’s will, it comes to pass, even if we do not wish it; but for you, the Lord is able to establish you in his faith, and will found you in it and make you spread abroad, whom he himself has planted, that you also may plant others through him. But I, so long as the Lord wills that I be in the flesh, do not resist; and again if he take me to him I rejoice and am glad.”

36 Ἀναβὰς οὖν πάλιν πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς τὸ ὁραθὲν αὐτῷ· κἀκεῖνοι ἐπένθουν τῇ ψυχῇ͵ κλαίοντες καὶ λέγοντες· Παρακαλοῦμέν σε͵ Πέτρε· ἡμῶν τῶν νεωτέρων φρόντισον. Καὶ ὁ Πέτρος αὐτοῖς ὅτι· Ἐὰν ᾖ τοῦ κυρίου τὸ θέλημα͵ γίνεται͵ καὶ ἐὰν ἡμεῖς μὴ θέλωμεν. Ὑμᾶς δὲ ὁ κύριος στηρίξαι δυνατός ἐστιν εἰς τὴν πίστιν αὐτοῦ͵ καὶ θεμελιώσει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ πλατυνεῖ ἐν αὐτῷ͵ οὓς αὐτὸς ἐφύτευσεν͵ ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς ἄλλους φυτεύσητε δι΄ αὐτοῦ. Ἐγὼ δέ͵ μέχρις με θέλει ὁ κύριος ἐν σαρκὶ εἶναι͵ οὐκ ἀντιλέγω· καὶ πάλιν θέλοντος λαβεῖν με͵ ἀγαλλιῶμαι καὶ εὐφραίνομαι.

And while Peter spoke in this way, and all the brethren wept, behold four soldiers took him and led him to Agrippa. And he in his madness (disease) commanded him to be crucified on the charge of being an atheist.

Ταῦτα τοῦ Πέτρου λαλοῦντος καὶ τῶν ἀδελφῶν πάντων κλαιόντων͵ ἰδοὺ στρατιῶται τέσσαρες αὐτὸν παραλαβόντες ἀπήγαγον τῷ Ἀγρίππᾳ. Κἀκεῖνος διὰ τὴν νόσον αὐτοῦ ἐπ΄ αἰτίᾳ ἀθεότητος ἐκέλευσεν αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι.

The whole multitude of the brethren therefore ran together, both of rich and poor, orphans and widows, weak and strong, desiring to see and to rescue Peter, while the people shouted with one voice, and would not be silenced: “What wrong has Peter done, O Agrippa? How has he hurt you? tell the Romans!” And others said: “We fear lest if this man die, his Lord destroy us all.”

Συνέδραμεν οὖν τῶν ἀδελφῶν τὸ πλῆθος ὅλον πλουσίων τε καὶ πενήτων͵ ὀρφανῶν τε καὶ χηρῶν͵ ἀδυνάτων τε καὶ δυνατῶν͵ βουλόμενοι ἰδεῖν καὶ ἀφαρ πάσαι τὸν Πέτρον͵ τῶν δήμων ἐκβοώντων ἀκατασχέτῳ καὶ μιᾷ φωνῇ· Τί ἠδίκησεν ὁ Πέτρος͵ Ἀγρίππα; Τί σε κακὸν διέθηκεν; Λέγε Ρωμαίοις. Καὶ ἕτεροι ἔλεγον· Φοβητέον͵ μὴ ἐὰν οὗτος ἀποθάνῃ͵ καὶ ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει ἡμᾶς πάντας.

And Peter when he came unto the place stilled the people and said: “You men who are soldiers of Christ! ye men that hope in Christ! remember the signs and wonders which ye have seen wrought through me, remember the compassion of God, how many cures he hath wrought for you. Wait for him who comes and will reward everyone according to their deeds. And now do not be bitter against Agrippa; for he is the minister of his father’s working. And this comes to pass at all events, for the Lord has manifested unto me that which is happening. But why do I delay and not draw near to the cross?”

Καὶ ὁ Πέτρος γενόμενος ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον͵ καταστείλας τὸν ὄχλον εἶπεν· Ἄνδρες͵ οἱ εἰς Χριστὸν στρατευόμενοι· ἄνδρες͵ οἱ ἐπὶ Χριστὸν ἐλπίζοντες· μέμνησθε ὧν εἴδετε δι΄ ἐμοῦ σημείων καὶ τεράτων͵ μέμνησθε τῆς συμπαθείας τοῦ θεοῦ͵ δι΄ ὑμᾶς πόσας ἰάσεις ἐποίησεν. Ὑπομεί νατε αὐτὸν ἐρχόμενον καὶ ἀποδίδοντα ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰς πράξεις αὐτοῦ. Καὶ νῦν πρὸς τὸν Ἀγρίππαν μὴ πικραίνεσθε· διάκονος γάρ ἐστιν τῆς πατρικῆς αὐτοῦ ἐνεργείας͵ καὶ πάντως τοῦτο γίνεται τοῦ κυρίου φανερώσαντός μοι τὸ συμβαῖνον. Ἀλλὰ τί μέλλω καὶ οὐ πρόσειμι τῷ σταυρῷ;

“Do not let the cross be for you who hope in Christ, this obvious [cross]: for it is something else, different from that which appears, even this passion which is in accordance with that of Christ. And now above all, because you who can hear are able to hear it from me, that am at the last and final hour of my life, listen: Separate your souls from every thing of the senses, from every thing that [only] appears, and does not truly exist. Blind your eyes, close your ears, put away your obvious deeds; and you shall perceive what concerns Christ, and the whole mystery of your salvation: and let thus much be said unto you that hear, as if it had not been spoken. But now it is time for you, Peter, to deliver up you  body to those who take it. Receive it then, you to whom it belongs. I beseech you the executioners, crucify me thus, with [my] head downward and not otherwise: and the reason wherefore, I will explain to those who hear.”

Σταυρὸς μὴ τοῦτο ὑμῖν ἔστω τὸ φαινόμενον͵ οἱ ἐπὶ Χριστὸν ἐλπίζοντες· ἕτερον γάρ τί ἐστιν παρὰ τὸ φαινόμενον τοῦτο κατὰ τὸ τοῦ Χριστοῦ πάθος. Καὶ νῦν μάλιστα͵ ὅτι δύνασθε οἱ δυνάμενοι ἀκοῦσαι ἐν ἐσχάτῃ ὥρᾳ καὶ τελευταίᾳ τοῦ βίου ὑπάρχοντός μου͵ ἀκούσατε· παντὸς αἰσθητηρίου χωρίσατε τὰς ἑαυ τῶν ψυχάς͵ παντὸς φαινομένου͵ μὴ ὄντος ἀληθοῦς· πηρώσατε ὑμῶν τὰς ὄψεις ταύτας͵ πηρώσατε ὑμῶν τὰς ἀκοὰς ταύτας͵ τὰς πράξεις τὰς ἐν φανερῷ· καὶ γνώσεσθε τὰ περὶ Χριστοῦ γεγονότα καὶ τὸ ὅλον τῆς σωτηρίας ὑμῶν μυστήριον· καὶ ταῦτα ὑμῖν εἰρήσθω τοῖς ἀκούουσιν ὡς μὴ εἰρημένα. Ὥρα δέ σοι͵ Πέτρε͵ παραδοῦναι τὸ σῶμα τοῖς λαμβάνουσιν. Ἀπολάβετε οὖν͵ οἷς ἐστιν ἴδιον. Ἀξιῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς τοὺς δημίους͵ οὕτως με σταυρώσατε͵ ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν καὶ μὴ ἄλλως· καὶ διὰ τί͵ τοῖς ἀκούουσιν ἐρῶ.
