1 TIMOTHY

 1¹ PAUL, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, ² To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. ³ As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, ⁴ nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies which promote speculations rather than the divine training that is in faith; ⁵ whereas the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. ⁶ Certain persons by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussion, ⁷ desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions. ⁸ Now we know that the law is good, if any one uses it lawfully, ⁹ understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, ¹⁰ immoral persons, sodomites, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, ¹¹ in accordance with the glorious gospel of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. ¹² I thank him who has given me strength for this, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful by appointing me to his service, ¹³ though I formerly blasphemed and persecuted and insulted him; but I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, ¹⁴ and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners; ¹⁶ but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience for an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. ¹⁷ To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. ¹⁸ This charge I commit to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophetic utterances which pointed to you, that inspired by them you may wage the good warfare, ¹⁹ holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith, ²⁰ among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

 ¹ Παῦλος ἀπόστολος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ κατ΄ ἐπιταγὴν θεοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τῆς ἐλπίδος ἡμῶν ² Τιμοθέῳ γνησίῳ τέκνῳ ἐν πίστει· χάρις͵ ἔλεος͵ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν. ³ Καθὼς παρεκάλεσά σε προσμεῖναι ἐν Ἐφέσῳ πορευό μενος εἰς Μακεδονίαν͵ ἵνα παραγγείλῃς τισὶν μὴ ἑτε ροδιδασκαλεῖν ⁴ μηδὲ προσέχειν μύθοις καὶ γενεαλογίαις ἀπεράντοις͵ αἵτινες ἐκζητήσεις παρέχουσιν μᾶλλον ἢ οἰκονομίαν θεοῦ τὴν ἐν πίστει· ⁵ τὸ δὲ τέλος τῆς παραγγε λίας ἐστὶν ἀγάπη ἐκ καθαρᾶς καρδίας καὶ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς καὶ πίστεως ἀνυποκρίτου͵ ⁶ ὧν τινες ἀστοχή σαντες ἐξετράπησαν εἰς ματαιολογίαν͵ ⁷ θέλοντες εἶναι νομοδιδάσκαλοι͵ μὴ νοοῦντες μήτε ἃ λέγουσιν μήτε περὶ τίνων διαβεβαιοῦνται. ⁸ Οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι καλὸς ὁ νόμος ἐάν τις αὐτῷ νομίμως χρῆται͵ ⁹ εἰδὼς τοῦτο͵ ὅτι δικαίῳ νόμος οὐ κεῖται͵ ἀνόμοις δὲ καὶ ἀνυποτάκτοις͵ ἀσεβέσι καὶ ἁμαρτωλοῖς͵ ἀνοσίοις καὶ βεβήλοις͵ πατρολῴαις καὶ μητρολῴαις͵ ἀνδροφόνοις͵ ¹⁰ πόρνοις͵ ἀρσενοκοίταις͵ ἀνδραποδισταῖς͵ ψεύσταις͵ ἐπιόρκοις͵ καὶ εἴ τι ἕτερον τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ διδασκαλίᾳ ἀντίκειται͵ ¹¹ κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ μακαρίου θεοῦ͵ ὃ ἐπιστεύθην ἐγώ. ¹² Χάριν ἔχω τῷ ἐνδυναμώσαντί με Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν͵ ὅτι πιστόν με ἡγήσατο θέμενος εἰς διακονίαν͵ ¹³ τὸ πρότερον ὄντα βλάσφημον καὶ διώκτην καὶ ὑβριστήν· ἀλλὰ ἠλεήθην͵ ὅτι ἀγνοῶν ἐποίησα ἐν ἀπιστίᾳ͵ ¹⁴ ὑπερεπλεόνασεν δὲ ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν μετὰ πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ. ¹⁵ πι στὸς ὁ λόγος καὶ πάσης ἀποδοχῆς ἄξιος͵ ὅτι Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἁμαρτωλοὺς σῶσαι· ὧν πρῶτός εἰμι ἐγώ͵ ¹⁶ ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἠλεήθην͵ ἵνα ἐν ἐμοὶ πρώτῳ ἐνδείξηται Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς τὴν ἅπασαν μακροθυμίαν͵ πρὸς ὑποτύπωσιν τῶν μελλόντων πιστεύειν ἐπ΄ αὐτῷ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον. ¹⁷ τῷ δὲ βασιλεῖ τῶν αἰώνων͵ ἀφθάρτῳ͵ ἀοράτῳ͵ μόνῳ θεῷ͵ τιμὴ καὶ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων· ἀμήν. ¹⁸ Ταύτην τὴν παραγγελίαν παρατίθεμαί σοι͵ τέκνον Τιμόθεε͵ κατὰ τὰς προαγούσας ἐπὶ σὲ προφητείας͵ ἵνα στρατεύῃ ἐν αὐταῖς τὴν καλὴν στρατείαν͵ ¹⁹ ἔχων πίστιν καὶ ἀγαθὴν συνείδησιν͵ ἥν τινες ἀπωσάμενοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν ἐναυάγησαν· ²⁰ ὧν ἐστιν Ὑμέναιος καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος͵ οὓς παρέδωκα τῷ Σατανᾷ ἵνα παιδευθῶσιν μὴ βλασφημεῖν.

2.¹ First of all, then, I urge that

supplications,

prayers,

intercessions,

and thanksgivings

be made for all men,

¹ Παρακαλῶ οὖν πρῶτον πάντων ποιεῖσθαι

δεήσεις͵

προσευχάς͵

ἐντεύξεις͵

εὐχαριστίας͵

ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων͵

  ² for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. ³ This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, ⁴ who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. ⁵ For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, ⁶ who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony to which was borne at the proper time. ⁷ For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. ⁸ I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; ⁹ also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire ¹⁰ but by good deeds, as befits women who profess religion. ¹¹ Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. ¹² I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. ¹³ For Adam was formed first, then Eve; ¹⁴ and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. ¹⁵ Yet woman will be saved through bearing children, if she continues in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.

 ² ὑπὲρ βασιλέων καὶ πάντων τῶν ἐν ὑπεροχῇ ὄντων͵ ἵνα ἤρεμον καὶ ἡσύχιον βίον διάγωμεν ἐν πάσῃ εὐσεβείᾳ καὶ σεμνότητι. ³ τοῦτο καλὸν καὶ ἀπόδεκτον ἐνώπιον τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ͵ ⁴ ὃς πάντας ἀνθρώπους θέλει σωθῆναι καὶ εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας ἐλθεῖν. ⁵ εἷς γὰρ θεός͵ εἷς καὶ μεσίτης θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων͵ ἄνθρωπος Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς͵ ⁶ ὁ δοὺς ἑαυτὸν ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων͵ τὸ μαρτύριον καιροῖς ἰδίοις· ⁷ εἰς ὃ ἐτέθην ἐγὼ κῆρυξ καὶ ἀπόστολοςἀλήθειαν λέγω͵ οὐ ψεύδομαι διδάσκαλος ἐθνῶν ἐν πίστει καὶ ἀληθείᾳ. ⁸ Βούλομαι οὖν προσεύχεσθαι τοὺς ἄνδρας ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ͵ ἐπαίροντας ὁσίους χεῖρας χωρὶς ὀργῆς καὶ δια λογισμοῦ· ⁹ ὡσαύτως [καὶ] γυναῖκας ἐν καταστολῇ κοσμίῳ μετὰ αἰδοῦς καὶ σωφροσύνης κοσμεῖν ἑαυτάς͵ μὴ ἐν πλέγμασιν καὶ χρυσίῳ ἢ μαργαρίταις ἢ ἱματισμῷ πολυτελεῖ͵ ¹⁰ ἀλλ΄ ὃ πρέπει γυναιξὶν ἐπαγγελλομέναις θεοσέβειαν͵ δι΄ ἔργων ἀγαθῶν. ¹¹ γυνὴ ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ μαν θανέτω ἐν πάσῃ ὑποταγῇ· ¹² διδάσκειν δὲ γυναικὶ οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω͵ οὐδὲ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρός͵ ἀλλ΄ εἶναι ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ. ¹³ Ἀδὰμ γὰρ πρῶτος ἐπλάσθη͵ εἶτα Εὕα· ¹⁴ καὶ Ἀδὰμ οὐκ ἠπατήθη͵ ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἐξαπατηθεῖσα ἐν παραβάσει γέγονεν. ¹⁵ σωθήσεται δὲ διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας͵ ἐὰν μείνωσιν ἐν πίστει καὶ ἀγάπῃ καὶ ἁγιασμῷ μετὰ σωφροσύνης.

 ¹¹ The women likewise must be serious, no slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things. ¹² Let deacons be the husband of one wife, and let them manage their children and their households well; ¹³ for those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁴ I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that, ¹⁵ if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. ¹⁶ Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of our religion: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

 ¹¹ γυναῖκας ὡσαύτως σεμνάς͵ μὴ διαβόλους͵ νηφαλίους͵ πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν. ¹² διάκονοι ἔστω σαν μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες͵ τέκνων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων· ¹³ οἱ γὰρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμὸν ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν περιποιοῦνται καὶ πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ. ¹⁴ Ταῦτά σοι γράφω͵ ἐλπίζων ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ τάχιον· ¹⁵ ἐὰν δὲ βραδύνω͵ ἵνα εἰδῇς πῶς δεῖ ἐν οἴκῳ θεοῦ ἀναστρέφεσθαι͵ ἥτις ἐστὶν ἐκκλησία θεοῦ ζῶντος͵ στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας. ¹⁶ καὶ ὁμολογουμένως μέγα ἐστὶν τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον· Ὃς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί͵ ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι͵ ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις͵ ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν͵ ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ͵ ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ.

 4.¹ Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, ² through the pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared, ³ who forbid marriage and enjoin abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. ⁴ For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving; ⁵ for then it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. ⁶ If you put these instructions before the brethren, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the good doctrine which you have followed. ⁷ Have nothing to do with godless and silly myths. Train yourself in godliness; ⁸ for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. ⁹ The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. ¹⁰ For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. ¹¹ Command and teach these things. ¹² Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. ¹³ Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching.

 ¹ Τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα ῥητῶς λέγει ὅτι ἐν ὑστέροις καιροῖς ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως͵ προσέχοντες πνεύμασιν πλάνοις καὶ διδασκαλίαις δαιμονίων͵ ² ἐν ὑποκρίσει ψευδολόγων͵ κεκαυστηριασμένων τὴν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν͵ ³ κωλυόντων γαμεῖν͵ ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἔκτισεν εἰς μετάλημψιν μετὰ εὐχαριστίας τοῖς πιστοῖς καὶ ἐπεγνωκόσι τὴν ἀλήθειαν. ⁴ ὅτι πᾶν κτίσμα θεοῦ καλόν͵ καὶ οὐδὲν ἀπόβλητον μετὰ εὐχαριστίας λαμβανόμενον͵ ⁵ ἁγιάζεται γὰρ διὰ λόγου θεοῦ καὶ ἐντεύξεως. ⁶ Ταῦτα ὑποτιθέμενος τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς καλὸς ἔσῃ διά κονος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ͵ ἐντρεφόμενος τοῖς λόγοις τῆς πίστεως καὶ τῆς καλῆς διδασκαλίας ᾗ παρηκολούθηκας· ⁷ τοὺς δὲ βεβήλους καὶ γραώδεις μύθους παραιτοῦ. γύμναζε δὲ σεαυτὸν πρὸς εὐσέβειαν· ⁸ ἡ γὰρ σωματικὴ γυμνασία πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶν ὠφέλιμος͵ ἡ δὲ εὐσέβεια πρὸς πάντα ὠφέλιμός ἐστιν͵ ἐπαγγελίαν ἔχουσα ζωῆς τῆς νῦν καὶ τῆς μελλούσης. ⁹ πιστὸς ὁ λόγος καὶ πάσης ἀποδοχῆς ἄξιος· ¹⁰ εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ κοπιῶμεν καὶ ἀγωνιζόμεθα͵ ὅτι ἠλπίκαμεν ἐπὶ θεῷ ζῶντι͵ ὅς ἐστιν σωτὴρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων͵ μάλιστα πιστῶν. ¹¹ Παράγγελλε ταῦτα καὶ δίδασκε. ¹² μηδείς σου τῆς νεότητος καταφρονείτω͵ ἀλλὰ τύπος γίνου τῶν πιστῶν ἐν λόγῳ͵ ἐν ἀναστροφῇ͵ ἐν ἀγάπῃ͵ ἐν πίστει͵ ἐν ἁγνείᾳ. ¹³ ἕως ἔρχομαι πρόσεχε τῇ ἀναγνώσει͵ τῇ παρακλήσει͵ τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ.

has set her hope on God

and continues in supplications and prayers night and day;

 ἤλπικεν ἐπὶ θεὸν

 καὶ προσμένει ταῖς δεήσεσιν καὶ ταῖς προσευχαῖς νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας·

brought up children,

shown hospitality,

washed the feet of the saints,

relieved the afflicted,

and devoted herself to doing good in every way.

εἰ ἐτεκνοτρόφησεν͵

εἰ ἐξενοδόχησεν͵

εἰ ἁγίων πόδας ἔνιψεν͵

εἰ θλιβομένοις ἐπήρκεσεν͵

εἰ παντὶ ἔργῳ ἀγαθῷ ἐπηκολούθησεν.

¹¹ But refuse to enrol younger widows; for when they grow wanton against Christ they desire to marry, ¹² and so they incur condemnation for having violated their first pledge. ¹³ Besides that, they learn to be idlers, gadding about from house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not. ¹⁴ So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, rule their households, and give the enemy no occasion to revile us. ¹⁵ For some have already strayed after Satan. ¹⁶ If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her assist them; let the church not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are real widows.

¹¹ νεω τέρας δὲ χήρας παραιτοῦ· ὅταν γὰρ καταστρηνιάσωσιν τοῦ Χριστοῦ͵ γαμεῖν θέλουσιν͵ ¹² ἔχουσαι κρίμα ὅτι τὴν πρώτην πίστιν ἠθέτησαν· ¹³ ἅμα δὲ καὶ ἀργαὶ μανθάνουσιν͵ περιερχόμεναι τὰς οἰκίας͵ οὐ μόνον δὲ ἀργαὶ ἀλλὰ καὶ φλύαροι καὶ περίεργοι͵ λαλοῦσαι τὰ μὴ δέοντα. ¹⁴ βούλομαι οὖν νεωτέρας γαμεῖν͵ τεκνογονεῖν͵ οἰκοδεσποτεῖν͵ μηδεμίαν ἀφορμὴν διδόναι τῷ ἀντικειμένῳ λοιδορίας χάριν· ¹⁵ ἤδη γάρ τινες ἐξετράπησαν ὀπίσω τοῦ Σατανᾶ. ¹⁶ εἴ τις πιστὴ ἔχει χήρας͵ ἐπαρκείτω αὐταῖς͵ καὶ μὴ βαρείσθω ἡ ἐκκλησία͵ ἵνα ταῖς ὄντως χήραις ἐπαρκέσῃ.

 ¹ Let all who are under the yoke of slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be defamed. ² Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brethren; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these duties. ³ If any one teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching which accords with godliness, ⁴ he is puffed up with conceit, he knows nothing; he has a morbid craving for controversy and for disputes about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, ⁵ and wrangling among men who are depraved in mind and bereft of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. ⁶ There is great gain in godliness with contentment; ⁷ for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world; ⁸ but if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content. ⁹ But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs. ¹¹ But as for you, man of God, shun all this; aim at righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. ¹² Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. ¹³ In the presence of God who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, ¹⁴ I charge you to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ; ¹⁵ and this will be made manifest at the proper time by the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, ¹⁶ who alone has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. ¹⁷ As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches but on God who richly furnishes us with everything to enjoy. ¹⁸ They are to do good, to be rich in good deeds, liberal and generous, ¹⁹ thus laying up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life which is life indeed. ²⁰ O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, ²¹ for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith. Grace be with you.

 ¹ Ὅσοι εἰσὶν ὑπὸ ζυγὸν δοῦλοι͵ τοὺς ἰδίους δεσπότας πάσης τιμῆς ἀξίους ἡγείσθωσαν͵ ἵνα μὴ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἡ διδασκαλία βλασφημῆται. ² οἱ δὲ πιστοὺς ἔχοντες δεσπότας μὴ καταφρονείτωσαν͵ ὅτι ἀδελφοί εἰσιν· ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον δουλευέτωσαν͵ ὅτι πιστοί εἰσιν καὶ ἀγαπη τοὶ οἱ τῆς εὐεργεσίας ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι. Ταῦτα δίδασκε καὶ παρακάλει. ³ εἴ τις ἑτεροδι δασκαλεῖ καὶ μὴ προσέρχεται ὑγιαίνουσιν λόγοις͵ τοῖς τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ͵ καὶ τῇ κατ΄ εὐσέβειαν διδασκαλίᾳ͵ ⁴ τετύφωται͵ μηδὲν ἐπιστάμενος͵ ἀλλὰ νο σῶν περὶ ζητήσεις καὶ λογομαχίας͵ ἐξ ὧν γίνεται φθόνος͵ ἔρις͵ βλασφημίαι͵ ὑπόνοιαι πονηραί͵ ⁵ διαπαρατριβαὶ διεφθαρμένων ἀνθρώπων τὸν νοῦν καὶ ἀπεστερημένων τῆς ἀληθείας͵ νομιζόντων πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν. ⁶ ἔστιν δὲ πορισμὸς μέγας ἡ εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας· ⁷ οὐδὲν γὰρ εἰσηνέγκαμεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον͵ ὅτι οὐδὲ ἐξενεγκεῖν τι δυνάμεθα· ⁸ ἔχοντες δὲ διατροφὰς καὶ σκεπάσματα͵ τούτοις ἀρκεσθησόμεθα. ⁹ οἱ δὲ βουλόμενοι πλουτεῖν ἐμπίπτουσιν εἰς πειρασμὸν καὶ παγίδα καὶ ἐπιθυμίας πολλὰς ἀνοήτους καὶ βλαβεράς͵ αἵτινες βυθί ζουσιν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς ὄλεθρον καὶ ἀπώλειαν· ¹⁰ ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστιν ἡ φιλαργυρία͵ ἧς τινες ὀρεγόμενοι ἀπεπλανήθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως καὶ ἑαυτοὺς περιέπειραν ὀδύναις πολλαῖς. ¹¹ Σὺ δέ͵ ὦ ἄνθρωπε θεοῦ͵ ταῦτα φεῦγε· δίωκε δὲ δικαιοσύνην͵ εὐσέβειαν͵ πίστιν͵ ἀγάπην͵ ὑπομονήν͵ πραϋ παθίαν. ¹² ἀγωνίζου τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα τῆς πίστεως͵ ἐπιλαβοῦ τῆς αἰωνίου ζωῆς͵ εἰς ἣν ἐκλήθης καὶ ὡμολό γησας τὴν καλὴν ὁμολογίαν ἐνώπιον πολλῶν μαρτύρων. ¹³ παραγγέλλω [σοι] ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῳογο νοῦντος τὰ πάντα καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ μαρτυρήσαντος ἐπὶ Ποντίου Πιλάτου τὴν καλὴν ὁμολογίαν͵ ¹⁴ τηρῆσαί σε τὴν ἐντολὴν ἄσπιλον ἀνεπίλημπτον μέχρι τῆς ἐπι φανείας τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ͵ ¹⁵ ἣν καιροῖς ἰδίοις δείξει ὁ μακάριος καὶ μόνος δυνάστης͵ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων͵ ¹⁶ ὁ μόνος ἔχων ἀθανασίαν͵ φῶς οἰκῶν ἀπρόσιτον͵ ὃν εἶδεν οὐδεὶς ἀνθρώπων οὐδὲ ἰδεῖν δύναται· ᾧ τιμὴ καὶ κράτος αἰώνιον· ἀμήν. ¹⁷ Τοῖς πλουσίοις ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι παράγγελλε μὴ ὑψηλοφρονεῖν μηδὲ ἠλπικέναι ἐπὶ πλούτου ἀδηλότητι͵ ἀλλ΄ ἐπὶ θεῷ τῷ παρέχοντι ἡμῖν πάντα πλουσίως εἰς ἀπόλαυσιν͵ ¹⁸ ἀγαθοεργεῖν͵ πλουτεῖν ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς͵ εὐμεταδότους εἶναι͵ κοινωνικούς͵ ¹⁹ ἀποθησαυρίζοντας ἑαυτοῖς θεμέλιον καλὸν εἰς τὸ μέλλον͵ ἵνα ἐπιλάβωνται τῆς ὄντως ζωῆς. ²⁰ Ὦ Τιμόθεε͵ τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον͵ ἐκτρεπόμενος τὰς βεβήλους κενοφωνίας καὶ ἀντιθέσεις τῆς ψευδωνύμου γνώσεως͵ ²¹ ἥν τινες ἐπαγγελλόμενοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν ἠστόχησαν. ⁸ Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God, ⁹ who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, ¹⁰ and now has manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. ¹¹ For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, ¹² and therefore I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. ¹³ Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; ¹⁴ guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. ¹⁵ You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, and among them Phygelus and Hermogenes. ¹⁶ May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me; he was not ashamed of my chains, ¹⁷ but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me eagerly and found me -- ¹⁸ may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day -- and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.

 ⁸ μὴ οὖν ἐπαισχυνθῇς τὸ μαρτύριον τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν μηδὲ ἐμὲ τὸν δέσμιον αὐτοῦ͵ ἀλλὰ συγκακοπάθησον τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ κατὰ δύναμιν θεοῦ͵ ⁹ τοῦ σώσαντος ἡμᾶς καὶ καλέσαντος κλήσει ἁγίᾳ͵ οὐ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα ἡμῶν ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἰδίαν πρόθεσιν καὶ χάριν͵ τὴν δοθεῖσαν ἡμῖν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων͵ ¹⁰ φανερωθεῖσαν δὲ νῦν διὰ τῆς ἐπιφανείας τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ͵ καταργήσαντος μὲν τὸν θάνατον φωτίσαντος δὲ ζωὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν διὰ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου͵ ¹¹ εἰς ὃ ἐτέθην ἐγὼ κῆρυξ καὶ ἀπόστολος καὶ διδάσκαλος. ¹² δι΄ ἣν αἰτίαν καὶ ταῦτα πάσχω͵ ἀλλ΄ οὐκ ἐπαισχύνομαι͵ οἶδα γὰρ ᾧ πεπίστευκα͵ καὶ πέπεισμαι ὅτι δυνατός ἐστιν τὴν παραθήκην μου φυλάξαι εἰς ἐκείνην τὴν ἡμέραν. ¹³ ὑπο τύπωσιν ἔχε ὑγιαινόντων λόγων ὧν παρ΄ ἐμοῦ ἤκουσας ἐν πίστει καὶ ἀγάπῃ τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ· ¹⁴ τὴν καλὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου τοῦ ἐνοικοῦντος ἐν ἡμῖν. ¹⁵ Οἶδας τοῦτο͵ ὅτι ἀπεστράφησάν με πάντες οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ͵ ὧν ἐστιν Φύγελος καὶ Ἑρμογένης. ¹⁶ δῴη ἔλεος ὁ κύριος τῷ Ὀνησιφόρου οἴκῳ͵ ὅτι πολλάκις με ἀνέψυξεν καὶ τὴν ἅλυσίν μου οὐκ ἐπαισχύνθη͵ ¹⁷ ἀλλὰ γενόμενος ἐν Ρώμῃ σπουδαίως ἐζήτησέν με καὶ εὗρεν ¹⁸ δῴη αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος εὑρεῖν ἔλεος παρὰ κυρίου ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳκαὶ ὅσα ἐν Ἐφέσῳ διηκόνησεν͵ βέλτιον σὺ γινώσκεις.

 ¹ You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, ² and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. ³ Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. ⁴ No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. ⁵ An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. ⁶ It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. ⁷ Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything. ⁸ Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, ⁹ the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. ¹⁰ Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory. ¹¹ The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we shall also live with him; ¹² if we endure, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; ¹³ if we are faithless, he remains faithful -- for he cannot deny himself. ¹⁴ Remind them of this, and charge them before the Lord to avoid disputing about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. ¹⁵ Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. ¹⁶ Avoid such godless chatter, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, ¹⁷ and their talk will eat its way like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, ¹⁸ who have swerved from the truth by holding that the resurrection is past already. They are upsetting the faith of some. ¹⁹ But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” ²⁰ In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earthenware, and some for noble use, some for ignoble. ²¹ If any one purifies himself from what is ignoble, then he will be a vessel for noble use, consecrated and useful to the master of the house, ready for any good work. ²² So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart. ²³ Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. ²⁴ And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one, an apt teacher, forbearing, ²⁵ correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth, ²⁶ and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

 ¹ Σὺ οὖν͵ τέκνον μου͵ ἐνδυναμοῦ ἐν τῇ χάριτι τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ͵ ² καὶ ἃ ἤκουσας παρ΄ ἐμοῦ διὰ πολλῶν μαρτύρων͵ ταῦτα παράθου πιστοῖς ἀνθρώποις͵ οἵτινες ἱκανοὶ ἔσονται καὶ ἑτέρους διδάξαι. ³ συγκακοπάθησον ὡς καλὸς στρατιώτης Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ. ⁴ οὐδεὶς στρα τευόμενος ἐμπλέκεται ταῖς τοῦ βίου πραγματείαις͵ ἵνα τῷ στρατολογήσαντι ἀρέσῃ· ⁵ ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ἀθλῇ τις͵ οὐ στεφανοῦται ἐὰν μὴ νομίμως ἀθλήσῃ. ⁶ τὸν κοπιῶντα γεωργὸν δεῖ πρῶτον τῶν καρπῶν μεταλαμβάνειν. ⁷ νόει ὃ λέγω· δώσει γάρ σοι ὁ κύριος σύνεσιν ἐν πᾶσιν. ⁸ Μνημόνευε Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐγηγερμένον ἐκ νεκρῶν͵ ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυίδ͵ κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν μου· ⁹ ἐν ᾧ κακοπαθῶ μέχρι δεσμῶν ὡς κακοῦργος͵ ἀλλὰ ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ οὐ δέδεται. ¹⁰ διὰ τοῦτο πάντα ὑπομένω διὰ τοὺς ἐκλεκτούς͵ ἵνα καὶ αὐτοὶ σωτηρίας τύχωσιν τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ μετὰ δόξης αἰωνίου. ¹¹ πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· εἰ γὰρ συναπεθάνομεν͵ καὶ συζήσομεν· ¹² εἰ ὑπομένομεν͵ καὶ συμβασιλεύσομεν· εἰ ἀρνησόμεθα͵ κἀκεῖνος ἀρνήσεται ἡμᾶς· ¹³ εἰ ἀπιστοῦμεν͵ ἐκεῖνος πιστὸς μένει͵ ἀρνήσασθαι γὰρ ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται. ¹⁴ Ταῦτα ὑπομίμνῃσκε͵ διαμαρτυρόμενος ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ μὴ λογομαχεῖν͵ ἐπ΄ οὐδὲν χρήσιμον͵ ἐπὶ κατα στροφῇ τῶν ἀκουόντων. ¹⁵ σπούδασον σεαυτὸν δόκιμον παραστῆσαι τῷ θεῷ͵ ἐργάτην ἀνεπαίσχυντον͵ ὀρθοτο μοῦντα τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας. ¹⁶ τὰς δὲ βεβήλους κενοφωνίας περιΐστασο· ἐπὶ πλεῖον γὰρ προκόψουσιν ἀσεβείας͵ ¹⁷ καὶ ὁ λόγος αὐτῶν ὡς γάγγραινα νομὴν ἕξει· ὧν ἐστιν Ὑμέναιος καὶ Φίλητος͵ ¹⁸ οἵτινες περὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἠστόχησαν͵ λέγοντες [τὴν] ἀνάστασιν ἤδη γεγονέναι͵ καὶ ἀνατρέπουσιν τήν τινων πίστιν. ¹⁹ ὁ μέντοι στερεὸς θεμέλιος τοῦ θεοῦ ἕστηκεν͵ ἔχων τὴν σφραγῖδα ταύτην· Ἔγνω κύριος τοὺς ὄντας αὐτοῦ͵ καί͵ Ἀποστήτω ἀπὸ ἀδικίας πᾶς ὁ ὀνομάζων τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου. ²⁰ Ἐν μεγάλῃ δὲ οἰκίᾳ οὐκ ἔστιν μόνον σκεύη χρυσᾶ καὶ ἀργυρᾶ ἀλλὰ καὶ ξύλινα καὶ ὀστράκινα͵ καὶ ἃ μὲν εἰς τιμὴν ἃ δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν· ²¹ ἐὰν οὖν τις ἐκκαθάρῃ ἑαυτὸν ἀπὸ τούτων͵ ἔσται σκεῦος εἰς τιμήν͵ ἡγιασμένον͵ εὔχρηστον τῷ δεσπότῃ͵ εἰς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἡτοι μασμένον. ²² τὰς δὲ νεωτερικὰς ἐπιθυμίας φεῦγε͵ δίωκε δὲ δικαιοσύνην͵ πίστιν͵ ἀγάπην͵ εἰρήνην μετὰ τῶν ἐπικα λουμένων τὸν κύριον ἐκ καθαρᾶς καρδίας. ²³ τὰς δὲ μωρὰς καὶ ἀπαιδεύτους ζητήσεις παραιτοῦ͵ εἰδὼς ὅτι γεννῶσιν μάχας· ²⁴ δοῦλον δὲ κυρίου οὐ δεῖ μάχεσθαι͵ ἀλλὰ ἤπιον εἶναι πρὸς πάντας͵ διδακτικόν͵ ἀνεξίκακον͵ ²⁵ ἐν πραΰτητι παιδεύοντα τοὺς ἀντιδιατιθεμένους͵ μή ποτε δώῃ αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς μετάνοιαν εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀλη θείας͵ ²⁶ καὶ ἀνανήψωσιν ἐκ τῆς τοῦ διαβόλου παγίδος͵ ἐζωγρημένοι ὑπ΄ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ ἐκείνου θέλημα.

 ¹ But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. ² For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, ³ inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, ⁴ treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, ⁵ holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people. ⁶ For among them are those who make their way into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and swayed by various impulses, ⁷ who will listen to anybody and can never arrive at a knowledge of the truth. ⁸ As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith; ⁹ but they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men. ¹⁰ Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, ¹¹ my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. ¹² Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, ¹³ while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. ¹⁴ But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it ¹⁵ and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, ¹⁷ that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

 ¹ Τοῦτο δὲ γίνωσκε͵ ὅτι ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις ἐνστή σονται καιροὶ χαλεποί· ² ἔσονται γὰρ οἱ ἄνθρωποι φί λαυτοι͵ φιλάργυροι͵ ἀλαζόνες͵ ὑπερήφανοι͵ βλάσφημοι͵ γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς͵ ἀχάριστοι͵ ἀνόσιοι͵ ³ ἄστοργοι͵ ἄσπον δοι͵ διάβολοι͵ ἀκρατεῖς͵ ἀνήμεροι͵ ἀφιλάγαθοι͵ ⁴ προ δόται͵ προπετεῖς͵ τετυφωμένοι͵ φιλήδονοι μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεοι͵ ⁵ ἔχοντες μόρφωσιν εὐσεβείας τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι· καὶ τούτους ἀποτρέπου. ⁶ ἐκ τούτων γάρ εἰσιν οἱ ἐνδύνοντες εἰς τὰς οἰκίας καὶ αἰχμαλωτί ζοντες γυναικάρια σεσωρευμένα ἁμαρτίαις͵ ἀγόμενα ἐπι θυμίαις ποικίλαις͵ ⁷ πάντοτε μανθάνοντα καὶ μηδέποτε εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας ἐλθεῖν δυνάμενα. ⁸ ὃν τρόπον δὲ Ἰάννης καὶ Ἰαμβρῆς ἀντέστησαν Μωϋσεῖ͵ οὕτως καὶ οὗτοι ἀνθίστανται τῇ ἀληθείᾳ͵ ἄνθρωποι κατεφθαρμένοι τὸν νοῦν͵ ἀδόκιμοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν· ⁹ ἀλλ΄ οὐ προκό ψουσιν ἐπὶ πλεῖον͵ ἡ γὰρ ἄνοια αὐτῶν ἔκδηλος ἔσται πᾶσιν͵ ὡς καὶ ἡ ἐκείνων ἐγένετο. ¹⁰ Σὺ δὲ παρηκολούθησάς μου τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ͵ τῇ ἀγωγῇ͵ τῇ προθέσει͵ τῇ πίστει͵ τῇ μακροθυμίᾳ͵ τῇ ἀγάπῃ͵ τῇ ὑπομονῇ͵ ¹¹ τοῖς διωγμοῖς͵ τοῖς παθήμασιν͵ οἷά μοι ἐγένετο ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ͵ ἐν Ἰκονίῳ͵ ἐν Λύστροις͵ οἵους διωγμοὺς ὑπήνεγκα· καὶ ἐκ πάντων με ἐρρύσατο ὁ κύριος. ¹² καὶ πάντες δὲ οἱ θέλοντες ζῆν εὐσεβῶς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ διωχθήσονται· ¹³ πονηροὶ δὲ ἄνθρωποι καὶ γόητες προκόψουσιν ἐπὶ τὸ χεῖρον͵ πλανῶντες καὶ πλανώμενοι. ¹⁴ σὺ δὲ μένε ἐν οἷς ἔμαθες καὶ ἐπιστώθης͵ εἰδὼς παρὰ τίνων ἔμαθες͵ ¹⁵ καὶ ὅτι ἀπὸ βρέφους [τὰ] ἱερὰ γράμματα οἶδας͵ τὰ δυνάμενά σε σοφίσαι εἰς σωτη ρίαν διὰ πίστεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ. ¹⁶ πᾶσα γραφὴ θεόπνευστος καὶ ὠφέλιμος πρὸς διδασκαλίαν͵ πρὸς ἐλεγ μόν͵ πρὸς ἐπανόρθωσιν͵ πρὸς παιδείαν τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ͵ ¹⁷ ἵνα ἄρτιος ᾖ ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος͵ πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐξηρτισμένος.

 ¹ I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: ² preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. ³ For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, ⁴ and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. ⁵ As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry. ⁶ For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. ⁷ I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. ⁸ Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. ⁹ Do your best to come to me soon. ¹⁰ For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. ¹¹ Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you; for he is very useful in serving me. ¹² Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. ¹³ When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. ¹⁴ Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will requite him for his deeds. ¹⁵ Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. ¹⁶ At my first defense no one took my part; all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! ¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the message fully, that all the Gentiles might hear it.  ¹ Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth which accords with godliness, ² in hope of eternal life which God, who never lies, promised ages ago ³ and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by command of God our Savior; ⁴ To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

 ¹ But as for you, teach what befits sound doctrine. ² Bid the older men be temperate, serious, sensible, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. ³ Bid the older women likewise to be reverent in behavior, not to be slanderers or slaves to drink; they are to teach what is good, ⁴ and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, ⁵ to be sensible, chaste, domestic, kind, and submissive to their husbands, that the word of God may not be discredited. ⁶ Likewise urge the younger men to control themselves. ⁷ Show yourself in all respects a model of good deeds, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, ⁸ and sound speech that cannot be censured, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us. ⁹ Bid slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to be refractory, ¹⁰ nor to pilfer, but to show entire and true fidelity, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. ¹¹ For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, ¹² training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, ¹³ awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, ¹⁴ who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. ¹⁵ Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

 ¹ Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for any honest work, ² to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all men. ³ For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by men and hating one another; ⁴ but when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, ⁶ which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. ⁸ The saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. ⁹ But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. ¹⁰ As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, ¹¹ knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. ¹² When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. ¹³ Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. ¹⁴ And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. ¹⁵ All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.

ΠΡΟΣ ΦΙΛΗΜΟΝΑ

 ¹ Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker ² and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house: ³ Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. ⁴ I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, ⁵ because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and all the saints, ⁶ and I pray that the sharing of your faith may promote the knowledge of all the good that is ours in Christ. ⁷ For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. ⁸ Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required, ⁹ yet for love’s sake I prefer to appeal to you -- I, Paul, an ambassador and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus -- ¹⁰ I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment. ¹¹ (Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) ¹² I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart. ¹³ I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel; ¹⁴ but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own free will. ¹⁵ Perhaps this is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back for ever, ¹⁶ no longer as a slave but more than a slave, as a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. ¹⁷ So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me. ¹⁸ If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. ¹⁹ I, Paul, write this with my own hand, I will repay it -- to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. ²⁰ Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. ²¹ Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. ²² At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping through your prayers to be granted to you. ²³ Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, ²⁴ and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers. ²⁵ The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

¹ Παῦλος δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ Τιμόθεος ὁ ἀδελφὸς Φιλήμονι τῷ ἀγαπητῷ καὶ συνεργῷ ἡμῶν ² καὶ Ἀπφίᾳ τῇ ἀδελφῇ καὶ Ἀρχίππῳ τῷ συστρατιώτῃ ἡμῶν καὶ τῇ κατ΄ οἶκόν σου ἐκκλησίᾳ· ³ χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. ⁴ Εὐχαριστῶ τῷ θεῷ μου πάντοτε μνείαν σου ποιού μενος ἐπὶ τῶν προσευχῶν μου͵ ⁵ ἀκούων σου τὴν ἀγάπην καὶ τὴν πίστιν ἣν ἔχεις πρὸς τὸν κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἁγίους͵ ⁶ ὅπως ἡ κοινωνία τῆς πίστεώς σου ἐνεργὴς γένηται ἐν ἐπιγνώσει παντὸς ἀγαθοῦ τοῦ ἐν ἡμῖν εἰς Χριστόν· ⁷ χαρὰν γὰρ πολλὴν ἔσχον καὶ παράκλησιν ἐπὶ τῇ ἀγάπῃ σου͵ ὅτι τὰ σπλάγχνα τῶν ἁγίων ἀναπέπαυται διὰ σοῦ͵ ἀδελφέ. ⁸ Διό͵ πολλὴν ἐν Χριστῷ παρρησίαν ἔχων ἐπιτάσσειν σοι τὸ ἀνῆκον͵ ⁹ διὰ τὴν ἀγάπην μᾶλλον παρακαλῶ͵ τοιοῦτος ὢν ὡς Παῦλος πρεσβύτης͵ νυνὶ δὲ καὶ δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ ¹⁰ παρακαλῶ σε περὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ τέκνου͵ ὃν ἐγέννησα ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς Ὀνήσιμον͵ ¹¹ τόν ποτέ σοι ἄχρηστον νυνὶ δὲ [καὶ] σοὶ καὶ ἐμοὶ εὔχρηστον͵ ¹² ὃν ἀνέπεμψά σοι͵ αὐτόν͵ τοῦτ΄ ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα· ¹³ ὃν ἐγὼ ἐβουλόμην πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν κατέ χειν͵ ἵνα ὑπὲρ σοῦ μοι διακονῇ ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου͵ ¹⁴ χωρὶς δὲ τῆς σῆς γνώμης οὐδὲν ἠθέλησα ποιῆσαι͵ ἵνα μὴ ὡς κατὰ ἀνάγκην τὸ ἀγαθόν σου ᾖ ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἑκούσιον. ¹⁵ τάχα γὰρ διὰ τοῦτο ἐχωρίσθη πρὸς ὥραν ἵνα αἰώνιον αὐτὸν ἀπέχῃς͵ ¹⁶ οὐκέτι ὡς δοῦλον ἀλλὰ ὑπὲρ δοῦλον͵ ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν͵ μάλιστα ἐμοί͵ πόσῳ δὲ μᾶλλον σοὶ καὶ ἐν σαρκὶ καὶ ἐν κυρίῳ. ¹⁷ Εἰ οὖν με ἔχεις κοινωνόν͵ προσλαβοῦ αὐτὸν ὡς ἐμέ. ¹⁸ εἰ δέ τι ἠδίκησέν σε ἢ ὀφείλει͵ τοῦτο ἐμοὶ ἐλλόγα· ¹⁹ ἐγὼ Παῦλος ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί͵ ἐγὼ ἀποτίσω· ἵνα μὴ λέγω σοι ὅτι καὶ σεαυτόν μοι προσ οφείλεις. ²⁰ ναί͵ ἀδελφέ͵ ἐγώ σου ὀναίμην ἐν κυρίῳ· ἀνάπαυσόν μου τὰ σπλάγχνα ἐν Χριστῷ. ²¹ Πεποιθὼς τῇ ὑπακοῇ σου ἔγραψά σοι͵ εἰδὼς ὅτι καὶ ὑπὲρ ἃ λέγω ποιήσεις. ²² ἅμα δὲ καὶ ἑτοίμαζέ μοι ξενίαν͵ ἐλπίζω γὰρ ὅτι διὰ τῶν προσευχῶν ὑμῶν χαρι σθήσομαι ὑμῖν. ²³ Ἀσπάζεταί σε Ἐπαφρᾶς ὁ συναιχμάλωτός μου ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ͵ ²⁴ Μᾶρκος͵ Ἀρίσταρχος͵ Δημᾶς͵ Λου κᾶς͵ οἱ συνεργοί μου. ²⁵ Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν.
