THURSDAY LAUDS - WEEK 1

[Hymn—O holy Lord, by all adored]

PSALM 97

[Ant. 1—With the sound of Music]

Sing a new song to the Lord,

for he has worked wonders.

His right hand and his holy arm

have brought salvation.

The Lord has made known his salvation;

has shown his justice to the nations.

He has remembered his truth and love

for the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation of our God.

Shout to the Lord all the earth,

ring out your joy.

Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp,

with the sound of music.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn,

acclaim the King, the Lord.

Let the sea and all within it thunder;

the world and all its peoples.

Let the rivers clap their hands

and the hills ring out their joy

at the presence of the Lord; for he comes,

he comes to rule the earth.

He will rule the world with justice

and the peoples with fairness.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

all glory for ever.

[Ant. 1—With the sound of Music]

PSALM 104

[Ant. 2—My soul, give thanks to the Lord]

Give thanks to the Lord, tell his name,

make known his deeds among the peoples.

O sing to him, sing his praise;

tell all his wonderful works!

Be proud of his holy name,

let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.

Consider the Lord and his strength;

constantly seek his face.

Remember the wonders he has done,

his miracles, the judgments he spoke.

O children of Abraham, his servant,

O sons of the Jacob he chose.

He, the Lord, is our God:

his judgments prevail in all the earth.

He remembers his covenant for ever,

his promise for a thousand generations,

the covenant he made with Abraham,

the oath he swore to Isaac.

He confirmed it for Jacob as a law,

for Israel as a covenant for ever.

He said: “I am giving you a land,

Canaan, your appointed heritage.”

When they were few in number,–

a handful of strangers in the land,

when they wandered from country to country,–

from one kingdom and nation to another,

he allowed no one to oppress them;

he admonished kings on their account:

“Do not touch those I have anointed;

do no harm to any of my prophets.”

But he called down a famine on the Land;

he broke the staff that supported them.

He had sent a man before them,

Joseph, sold as a slave.

His feet were put in chains,

his neck was bound with iron,

until what he said came to pass

and the word of the Lord proved him true.

Then the king sent and released him;

the ruler of the peoples set him free,

making him master of his house

and ruler of all he possessed,

to instruct his princes as he pleased

and to teach his elders wisdom.

So Israel came into Egypt,

Jacob lived in the country of Ham.

He gave his people increase;

he made them stronger than their foes,

whose hearts he turned to hate his people

and to deal deceitfully with his servants.

Then he sent Moses, his servant,

and Aaron the man he had chosen.

Through them he showed his marvels

and his wonders in the country of Ham.

He sent darkness, and dark was made

but Egypt resisted his words.

He turned the waters into blood

and caused their fish to die.

Their land was alive with frogs,

even in the halls of their kings.

He spoke; the dog-fly came

and gnats covered the land.

He sent hail-stones in the place of rain

and flashing fire in their land.

He struck their vines and fig-trees;

he shattered the trees through their land.

He spoke; the locusts came,

young locusts, too many to be counted.

They ate up every blade in the land;

they ate up all the fruit of their fields.

He struck all the first-born in their land,

the finest flower of their sons.

He led out of Israel with silver and gold.

In his tribes were none who fell behind.

Egypt rejoiced when they left,

for dread had fallen upon them.

He spread a cloud as a screen

and fire to give light in the darkness.

When they asked for food he sent quails;

he filled them with bread from heaven.

He pierced the rock to give them water;

it gushed forth in the desert like a river.

For he remembered his holy word,

which he gave to Abraham, his servant.

So he brought out his people with joy,

his chosen ones with shouts of rejoicing.

And he gave them the land of the nations.

They took the fruit of other men’s toil,

that thus they might keep his precepts,

that thus they might obey his laws.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

give praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 2—My soul, give thanks to the Lord]

THURSDAY VESPERS - WEEK 1

[Hymn - Come, thou almighty God]

PSALM 69

[Ant. 1 - Let there be rejoicing]

O God make haste to my rescue,

Lord, come to my aid!

Let there be shame and confusion

on those who seek my life.

O let them turn back in confusion,

who delight in my harm,

let them retreat, covered with shame,

who jeer at my lot.

Let them say forever:  “God is great,”

who love your saving help.

As for me, wretched and poor,

come to me, O God.

You are my rescuer, my help,

O Lord, do not delay.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

all glory for ever.

[Ant. 1 - Let there be rejoicing and gladness]

PSALM 25

[Ant. 2 - Lord, I love the house where you dwell,]

Give judgment for me, O Lord:

for I walk the path of perfection.

I trust in the Lord; I have not wavered.

Examine me, Lord and try me;

O test my heart and my mind,

for your love is before my eyes

and I walk according to your truth.

I never take my place with liars

and with hypocrites I shall not go.

I hate the evil-doer’s company:

I will not take my place with the wicked.

To prove my innocence I wash my hands

and take my place around your altar,

singing a song of thanksgiving,

proclaiming all your wonders.

O Lord, I love the house where you dwell,

the place where your glory abides.

Do not sweep me away with sinners,

nor my life with bloodthirsty men

in whose hands are evil plots,

whose right hands are filled with gold.

As for me, I walk the path of perfection.

Redeem me and show me your mercy.

My foot stands on level ground:

I will bless the Lord in the assembly.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

all praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 2 - Lord, I love the house where you dwell]

PSALM 15

[Ant. 3 - I keep the Lord ever in my sight, he will]

Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.

I say to the Lord:  “You are my God.

My happiness lies in you alone.”

He has put into my heart a marvelous love

for the faithful ones who dwell in his land.

Those who choose other gods increase their sorrows.

Never will I offer their offerings of blood.

Never will I take their name upon my lips.

O Lord, it is you who are my portion and my cup;

it is you yourself who are my prize.

The lot marked out for me is my delight:

welcome indeed the heritage that falls to me!

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,

who even at night directs my heart.

I keep the Lord ever in my sight:

since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;

even my body shall rest in safety.

For you will not leave my soul among the dead,

nor let your beloved know decay.

You will show me the path of life,

the fullness of joy in your presence,

at your right hand happiness for ever.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit,

the God who is, who was, and is to come,

all praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 3 - I keep the Lord ever in my sight]

PSALM 1

[Ant. 4 - Happy is the man whose delight is the law]

Happy indeed is the man

who follows not the counsel of the wicked;

nor lingers in the way of sinners

nor sits in the company of scorners,

but whose delight is the law of the Lord

and who ponders his law day and night.

He is like a tree that is planted

beside the flowing waters,

that yields its fruit in due season

and whose leaves shall never fade;

and all that he does shall prosper.

Not so are the wicked, not so!

For they like winnowed chaff

shall be driven away by the wind.

When the wicked are judged they shall not stand,

nor find room among those who are just;

for the Lord guards the way of the just

but the way of the wicked leads to doom.

 AB Give praise to the Father almighty,

D to his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord,

E to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts

F both now and for evermore.

[Ant. 4 - Happy is the man]

FRIDAY LAUDS - WEEK 1

Hymn - Come, let us join our cheerful songs

PSALM 79

[Ant. 1 - God of hosts, bring us back:  let your face]

O shepherd of Israel, hear us,

you who lead Joseph’s flock,

shine forth from your cherubim throne

upon Ephraim, Benjamin, Manasseh.

O Lord, rouse up your might,

O Lord, come to our help.

Ant.

Lord God of hosts, how long

will you frown on your people’s plea?

You have fed them with tears for their bread,

an abundance of tears for their drink.

You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,

our enemies laugh us to scorn.

Ant.

You brought a vine out of Egypt;

to plant it you drove out the nations.

Before it you cleared the ground;

it took root and spread through the land.

The mountains were covered with its shadow,

the cedars of God with its boughs.

It stretched out its branches to the sea,

to the Great River it stretched out its shoots.

Then why have you broken down its walls?

It is plucked by all who pass by.

It is ravaged by the boar of the forest,

devoured by the beasts of the field.

God of hosts, turn again, we implore,

look down from heaven and see.

Visit this vine and protect it,

the vine your right hand has planted.

Men have burnt it with fire and destroyed it.

May they perish at the frown of your face.

May your hand be on the man you have chosen,

the man you have given your strength.

And we shall never forsake you again:

give us life that we may call upon your name.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

all praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 1 - God of hosts, bring us back, let your face]

PSALM 22

[Ant. 2 - I trust in you, O Lord; you will rescue me]

The Lord is my shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want.

Fresh and green are the pastures

where he gives me repose;

near restful waters he leads me,

to revive my drooping spirit.

He guides me along the right path;

he is true to his name.

If I should walk in the valley of darkness

no evil would I fear.

You are there with your crook and your staff;

with these you give me comfort.

You have prepared a banquet for me

in the sight of my foes.

My head you have anointed with oil;

my cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me

all the days of my life.

In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell

for ever and ever.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

all glory for ever.

[Ant. 2 - I trust in you, O Lord, you will rescue me]

PSALM 24

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.–

I trust you, let me not be disappointed;

do not let my enemies triumph.

Those who hope in you shall not be disappointed,

but only those who wantonly break faith.

Lord, make me know your ways;

Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my savior.

In you I hope all day long

because of your goodness, O Lord.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth.

In your love remember me.

The Lord is good and upright;

he shows the path to those who stray.

He guides the humble in the right path;

he teaches his way to the poor.

His ways are faithfulness and love

for those who keep his covenant and will.

Lord, for the sake of your name

forgive my guilt, for it is great.

If anyone fears the Lord,

he will show him the path he should choose.

His soul shall live in happiness

and his children possess the land.

The Lord’s friendship is for those who revere him;

to them he reveals his covenant.

My eyes are always on the Lord;

for he rescues my feet from the snare.

Turn to me, and have mercy

for I am lonely and poor.

Relieve the anguish of my heart

and set me free from my distress.

See my affliction and my toil

and take all my sins away.

See how many are my foes;

how violent their hatred for me.

Preserve my life and rescue me.

Do not disappoint me, you are my refuge.

May innocence and uprightness protect me:

for my hope is in you, O Lord.

Redeem Israel, O God,

from all its distress.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

give praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 2 - I trust in you, O Lord; you will rescue me]

FRIDAY VESPERS - WEEK 1

[Hymn - Perfect in love - Lord can it be]

PSALM 56

[Ant. 1 - My heart is ready, o God]

Have mercy on me, God, have mercy,

for in you my soul has taken refuge.

In the shadow of your wings I take refuge

till the storms of destruction pass by.

I call to God the Most High,

to God who has always been my help.

May he send from heaven and save me

and shame those who assail me.

D May God send his truth and his love.

My soul lies down among lions,

who would devour the sons of men.

Their teeth are spears and arrows,

their tongue a sharpened sword.

B O God, arise above the heavens;

D may your glory shine on earth!

They laid a snare for my steps,

my soul was bowed down.

They dug a pit in my path

but fell in it themselves.

[Ant. 1 - My heart is ready, o God, I will sing]

B Awake my soul,

C awake lyre and harp,

D I will awake the dawn.

I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,

among the nations I will praise you;

for your love reaches to the heavens

and your truth to the skies.

O God, arise above the heavens;

may your glory shine on earth!

To the Father, the Son and Holy  Spirit

all glory  for ever.

Repeat Ant. as above

PSALM 53

[Ant. 2 - God is my help, he upholds my life]

O God, save me by your name;

by your power, uphold my cause.

O God, hear my prayer;

listen to the words of my mouth.

B For proud men have risen against me,

C ruthless men seek my life;

D they have no regard for God.

But I have God for my help;

the Lord upholds my life.

Let the evil recoil upon my foes:

you who are faithful, destroy them.

I will sacrifice to you with willing heart

and praise your name for it is good:

for you have rescued me from all my distress

and my eyes have seen the downfall of my foes.

Give praise to the Father almighty,

to his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord,

to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts

both now and for evermore.

[Ant. 2 - God is my help, he upholds my life]

PSALM 76

[Ant. 3 - What god is as great as our God?]

I cry aloud to God,

cry aloud to God, that he may hear me.

My hands were raised at night without ceasing:

my soul refused to be consoled;

I remembered God and I groaned,

I pondered and my spirit fainted.

You withheld sleep from my eyes.

I was troubled, I could not speak.

I thought of the days of long ago

and remembered the years long past.

At night I mused within my heart;

I pondered and my spirit questioned.

“Will the Lord reject us for ever?

Will he show us his favor no more?

Has his love vanished for ever?

Has his promise come to an end?

Does God forget his mercy?

or in anger withhold his compassion?”

I said:  “This is what causes my grief,

that the way of the Most High has changed.”

I remember the deeds of the Lord,

I remember your wonders of old,

I muse on all your works

and ponder your mighty  deeds.

Your ways, O God, are holy.

What god is great as our God?

You are the God who works wonders:

you showed your power among the peoples;

your strong arm redeemed your people,

the sons of Jacob and Joseph.

The waters saw you, O God,

the waters saw you and trembled;

the depths were moved with terror.

The clouds poured down rain,

the skies sent forth their voice;

your arrows flashed to and fro.

Your thunder rolled round the sky,

your flashes lighted up the world.

The earth was moved and trembled

when your way led through the sea,

your path through the mighty waters

and no one saw your footprints.

You guided your people like a flock

by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Give praise to the Father almighty,

to his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord,

to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts

both now and for evermore.

[Ant. 3 - What god is as great as our God?]

PSALM 63

[Ant. 4 - All men will tell what God has done]

Hear my voice, O God, as I complain,

guard my life from dread of the foe.

Hide me from the band of the wicked,

from the throng of those who do evil.

They sharpen their tongues like swords;

they aim bitter words like arrows

to shoot at the innocent from ambush,

shooting suddenly and recklessly.

They scheme their evil course;

they conspire to lay secret snares.

They say:  “Who will see us?

Who can search out our crimes?”

He will search who searches the mind

and knows the depths of the heart.

God has shot them with his arrow

and dealt them sudden wounds.

Their own tongue has brought them to ruin

and all who see them mock.

Then will all men fear:

they will tell what God has done.

They will understand God’s deeds.

The just will rejoice in the Lord

and fly to him for refuge.

All the upright hearts will glory

C To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

D all praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 4 - All men will tell what God has done]

RESPONSE: PSALM 55

[Ant. - In God I trust:  I shall not fear:]

Have mercy on me, God, men crush me;

they fight me all day long and oppress me.

My foes crush me all day long,

for many fight proudly against me.

When I fear, I will trust in you,

in God whose word I praise.

Response

All day long they distort my words,

all their thought is to harm me.

They band together in ambush,

track me down and seek my life.

Repay them, God, for their crimes;

in your anger cast down the peoples.

Response

You have kept an account of my wanderings;

you have kept a record of my tears;

(are they not written in your book?)

Then my foes will be put to flight

on the day that I call to you.

This I know, that God is on my side.

Response

I am bound by the vows I have made you.

O God, I will offer you praise

for you rescued my soul from death,

you kept my feet from stumbling,

that I may walk in the presence of God

and enjoy the light of the living.

SATURDAY LAUDS - WEEK 1

[Hymn - Lord God, your light which dims the stars]

PSALM 46

[Ant. 1 - Sing praise to God:  he is our Lord]

All peoples, clap your hands,

cry to God with shouts of joy!

For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear,

great king over all the earth.

He subdues peoples under us

and nations under our feet.

Our inheritance, our glory, is from him,

given to Jacob out of love.

God goes up with shouts of joy;

the Lord goes up with trumpet blast.

Sing praise for God, sing praise,

sing praise to our king, sing praise.

God is king over all the earth;

sing praise with all your skill.

God is king over the nations;

God reigns on his holy throne.

The princes of the peoples are assembled

with the people of Abraham’s God.

The rulers of the earth belong to God,

to God who reigns over all.

Give praise to the Father almighty,

to his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord,

to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts,

both now and for evermore.

[Ant. 1 - Sing praise to God:  he is our Lord]

PSALM 5

[Ant. 2 - In the morning I offer you my prayer]

To my words, give ear, O Lord,

give heed to my groaning.

Attend to the sound of my cries,

my King and my God.

It is you whom I invoke, O Lord.

In the morning you hear me;

in the morning I offer you my prayer,

watching and waiting.

You are no God who loves evil;

no sinner is your guest.

The boastful shall not stand their ground

before your face.

You hate all who do evil:

you destroy all who lie.

The deceitful and bloodthirsty man

the Lord detests.

But I through the greatness of your love

have access to your house.

I bow down before your holy temple,

filled with awe.

Lead me, Lord, in your justice, –

because of those who lie in wait;

make clear your way before me.

No truth can be found in their mouths,

their heart is all mischief,

their throat a wide-open grave,

all honey their speech.

Declare them guilty, O God.

Let them fail in their designs.

Drive them out for their many offences;

for they have defied you.

All those you protect shall be glad

and ring out their joy.

You shelter them; in you they rejoice,

those who love your name.

It is you who bless the just man, Lord:

you surround him with favor as with a shield.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

all praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 2 - In the morning I offer you my prayer]

PSALM 62

O God, you are my God, for you I long;

for you my soul is thirsting.

My body pines for you

like a dry, weary land without water.

So I gaze on you in the sanctuary

to see your strength and your glory.

For your love is better than life,

my lips will speak your praise.

So I will bless you all my life,

in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul shall be filled as with a banquet,

my mouth shall praise you with joy.

On my bed I remember you;–

on you I muse through the night

for you have been my help;

in the shadow of your wings I rejoice: –

my soul clings to you;

your right hand holds me fast.

Those who seek to destroy my life

shall go down to the depths of the earth.

They shall be put into the power of the sword

and left as the prey of the jackals.

But the king shall rejoice in God;

for the mouth of the liars shall be silenced.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

give praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 2 - In the morning I offer you my prayer]

SATURDAY VESPERS - WEEK 2

[Hymn - O Trinity of Blessed light]

PSALM 141

[Ant. 1 - You Lord, are my refuge, all I have left]

With all my voice I cry to the Lord,

with all my voice I entreat the Lord.

I pour out my trouble before him;

I tell him all my distress

while my spirit faints within me.

But you, O Lord, know my path.

On the way where I shall walk

they have hidden a snare to entrap me.

Look on my right and see:

there is no one who takes my part.

I have no means of escape,

not one who cares for my soul.

I cry to you, O Lord. —

I have said:  “You are my refuge,

all I have in the land of the the living.”

Listen, then, to my cry

for I am in the depths of distress.

Rescue me from those who pursue me

for they are stronger than I.

Bring my soul out of this prison

and then I shall praise your name.

Around me the just will assemble

because of your goodness to me.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

give praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 1 - You, Lord, are my refuge, all I have left]

PSALM 144

[Ant. 2 - I will give you glory, O God my King!]

I will give you glory, O God my King,

I will bless your name for ever.

I will bless you day after day

and praise your name for ever.

The Lord is great, highly to be praised,

his greatness cannot be measured.

Age to age shall proclaim your works,

shall declare your mighty deeds,

shall speak of your splendor and glory,

tell the tale of your wonderful works.

They will speak of your terrible deeds,

recount your greatness and might.

They will recall your abundant goodness;

age to age shall ring out your justice.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion,

slow to anger, abounding in love.

How good is the Lord to all,

compassionate to all his creatures.

All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,

and your friends shall repeat their blessing.

They shall speak of the glory of your reign

and declare your might, O God,

to make known to men your mighty deeds

and the glorious splendor of your reign.

Yours is an everlasting kingdom;

your rule lasts from age to age.

The Lord is faithful in all his words

and loving in all his deeds.

The Lord supports all who fall

and raises all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all creatures look to you

and you give them their food in due time.

You open wide your hand,

grant the desires of all who live.

The Lord is just in all his ways

and loving in all his deeds.

He is close to all who call him,

who call on him from their hearts.

He grants the desires of those who fear him,

he hears their cry and he saves them;

The Lord protects all who love him;

but the wicked he will utterly destroy.

Let me speak the praise of the Lord, —

let all mankind bless his holy name

for ever, for ages unending.

To the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

give praise and glory for ever.

[Ant. 2 - I will give you glory]

READING from the SACRED SCRIPTURES

RESPONSE: PSALM 140

[Ant. - Let my prayer come before you like incense]

I have called to you, Lord; hasten to help me!

Hear my voice when I cry to you.

Let my prayer arise before you like incense,

the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.

Response

Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth;

keep watch, O Lord, at the door of my lips!

Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong,

to evil deeds with men who are sinners.

Response

Never allow me to share in their feasting.

If a good man strikes or reproves me it is kindness;

but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.

Let my prayer be ever against their malice.

Response

Their princes were thrown down by the side of the rock:

then they understood that my words were kind.

As a millstone is shattered to pieces on the ground,

so their bones were strewn at the mouth of the grave.

Response

To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned:

in you I take refuge; spare my soul!

From the trap they have laid for me keep me safe:

keep me from the snares of those who do evil.

Response

Let the wicked fall into the traps they have set

whilst I pursue my way unharmed.

Be praise to the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit

yesterday, today and for ages unending.

Response

[V/. - May our evening prayer ascend to you]
