QUARR ABBEY
THE ISLE of WIGHT

Official Quarr Abbey Website: https://quarrabbey.org/

QUARR Abbey on the Isle of Wight was founded in 1901 as a result of persecution of the Catholic Church by the French government, which became particularly severe in 1900.  The monks of Solesmes in Francis had been temporarily expelled from their monastery in 1880; but the French government of 1901 was even more radically anti-clerical, and the monks were expelled from there abbey and forced into exile. Under the capable leadership of Abbot Paul Delatte, OSB, they found refuge and welcome in England on the Isle of Wight, across the Solent channel from the city of Portsmouth,

THE monks initially rented Appeldurcombe House near Wroxell, on the south coast of the island, and built a temporary church.

IN 1907 the monks purchased Quarr Abbey House near Ryde, on the north side of the island, which included the ruins of the ancient Quarr Abbey.  Dom Paul Bellot, OSB (1876-1944), a monk of Solesmes, was the architect of the new Abbey, which was completed in 1912.
