CONFEDERATION CATOLOGUS 2015:   pdf;    MS-Word

A
LTHOUGH often inaccurately referred to as “The Order of St. Benedict” (Ordo Sancti Benedicti, “OSB”) the Benedictine Confederation is not an “order” in the strict canonical sense of the word.  There is no single Benedictine superior with jurisdiction over all Benedictine monasteries as there is with the Dominicans and Jesuits.  Instead, each of the nineteen Congregations of the Benedictine Confederation (SS. Patriarchć Benedicti Familić Confśderatć) is autonomous, with its own Constitutions and Abbot President.

IN his papal brief Summum semper (12 July 1893) Pope Leo XIII established the Benedictine Confederation and created the office of Abbot Primate.  The Abbot Primate assists in coordinating communication between the monasteries and congregations of the confederation, and he plays a role in the administration of Sant Anselmo, the international Benedictine house of studies in Rome, where he resides, but he has no authority over the superiors or monks of the individual Congregations that compose the Confederation. The role of the Primate and organizatioon of Sant Anselmo are described in the Lex Propria (“proper law”) of the Confederation, most recently updated in 2008.
